The Beacon of Creation podcast had a design challenge to create a card for the commander 2019 decks this past week. I had an idea to create a new
Magus-like cycle, where instead of creatures embodying various classic non-creature cards, it was artifacts embodying classic creatures. For the Populate deck, I immediately went to
Deranged Hermit as a possibility, but they just printed
Deep Forest Hermit in Modern Horizons. Instead I came up with this:
A seed for a Wurm tribal deck, plus there's a reasonable number of Wurm token-making spells out there that can take advantage. Also, a tiny name reference to
Craw Wurm. It doesn't get more classic than that.
Thinking about my Deranged Hermit idea some more, I decided it would be fun to make a kind of reverse lord for squirrels. May I present, Hermit Squirrel:
I love the idea of four Elves doting on a single Squirrel.
