There's cleave, Blood tokens, and double-faced cards, plus faction mechanics for each ally-color tribe that doesn't have one yet: disturb for UW Spirits, exploit for UB Zombies, and training for GW Humans. Interestingly they're all adaptations or evolutions of existing mechanics: training is the inverse of mentor, disturb is the Midnight Hunt mechanic but with Auras on the back side, and exploit is reused from Tarkir's Silumgar faction without any further update.</p><p>Imagine you've been tasked with finding a mechanic to reuse or adapt for an enemy-color tribe in a future set. Figure out what that mechanic is and how (or whether) you'll tweak it, then design a mono-colored creature belonging to that tribe. I'll try to offer some feedback of my own starting on Monday.<p></p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p>This week I went to the random card button and it spat out <u>Blood Lust</u>, which based on the name and the... very 90's art... may be somewhat different from normal <a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bloodlust">bloodlust</a>. At any rate it's notable as a +X/-X effect that's unable to kill creatures on its own, which I guess justifies it being in red instead of black. Modern cards don't often do this kind of special-casing but it does open up some interesting design space in this case.</p><p>Your challenge for this week is to design another common card that's unable to remove a creature on its own but could still be used to help remove a creature. For bonus points, use it to color-shift an effect based on not being unconditional removal anymore, the same way Blood Lust does.</p><p>Good luck and have fun!</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5479847193762153273.post-65210012661675135062021-10-13T17:25:00.007-04:002021-10-13T22:07:33.286-04:00MOXTOBER - Thirteen: Luck and Solitaire Games<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><p></p><blockquote><a href="https://twitter.com/wobbles" style="color: #a97611; display: inline; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px; padding: 1em 0px; text-decoration: none;"><img alt="Wobbles the Goose" border="0" data-original-height="552" data-original-width="690" height="159" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vz_9kBQ9zoE/YTBsg9VVwEI/AAAAAAAAA-4/YtBc-S95-Y0u_VqdxhOYUdvo3VvtCKD7QCLcBGAsYHQ/w200-h159/11D2C072-79D0-4275-8DCB-634B4350EE02.jpeg" style="border: none; box-sizing: border-box; max-width: 100%; position: relative;" width="200" /></a></blockquote><p></p></div><p></p><p style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">#wotcsafe</p><p style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;"></p><div style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;"><p></p>It’s <a href="https://twitter.com/bradleyrose/status/1443232263164993538?s=20" style="color: #a97611; text-decoration: none;">#MTGMoxtober</a>! It’s really useful! However, that template was made 6 years ago for 150 card sets. Click through to see this weekend's design challenge. Your mission is to design a custom Magic card that follows the guidelines. Over the course of the weekend, give feedback to your fellow designers on their designs and incorporate their feedback to iterate on your own. I'll try to offer some feedback of my own starting on Monday.<p></p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p>Midnight Hunt showcased two kinds of cards that care about the day-night mechanic: daybound / nightbound DFCs, and "twilight" cards that care about day turning to night or back in white, blue, and red. But I'm sure we can find something more to do with the mechanic! Design a rare instant that references day or night. (Hint: remember to specify what happens if it's neither day nor night.) For bonus points, make it as much of a top-down design as possible.</p><p>Good luck and have fun!</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5479847193762153273.post-64757773531618943332021-10-08T23:29:00.003-04:002021-10-15T13:19:17.430-04:00Five Design Challenges for GDS4<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhXpNYy9SzMyGt0h4AmIQpt0TO5Xr340H4eW81cLagN5w1P6ghhBAo_3e0AzL46ZDrAJuUX0phWaqjpt9xQQamr6uNh5Yo00W42hNtEgwavj7zuGLdHTGw56Ll6BmVDRLvooUYe7mOjo5PT0yNnqL6yS4YbPKQY46q-nL_Cc73wC4T4qtxDazNtfeqV=s158" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="158" data-original-width="158" height="158" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhXpNYy9SzMyGt0h4AmIQpt0TO5Xr340H4eW81cLagN5w1P6ghhBAo_3e0AzL46ZDrAJuUX0phWaqjpt9xQQamr6uNh5Yo00W42hNtEgwavj7zuGLdHTGw56Ll6BmVDRLvooUYe7mOjo5PT0yNnqL6yS4YbPKQY46q-nL_Cc73wC4T4qtxDazNtfeqV" width="158" /></a></div>Starting November 1st, I'm joining Wizards of the Coast as a designer. As a parting gift to the wonderful Goblin Artisans community, I'm leaving five design practice challenges to help you develop your skills on GDS4.<br /><p></p><p></p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p>These challenges hew closely to the contents of GDS3, with a focus on designing commons and making cards that go together in an environment. These were inspired by Zach Barash's practice challenges for Hipsters of the Coast, which were very useful, and are intended to help you warm up after the GDS4 is announced. That said, there's nothing wrong with doing them now.</p><p>Because I'm pretty close to a point where I can't look at custom <i>Magic</i> designs, please do not post answers in the comments just to be safe. Thanks!</p><p><b>1. </b>Design a two-color draft archetype for use in a premiere set. Try to choose a draft archetype that explores space that hasn’t been explored by that color combination before. You may use one deciduous mechanic. You may design up to three creatures and up to two of each noncreature card type. Design the following:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Three commons</li><li>Two uncommons</li><li>One rare</li><li>One mythic rare</li></ul><p></p><p><b>2.</b> Choose your favorite draftable <i>Magic</i> set. Create ten commons, two of each color, that could fit into that set. Each color should have one creature and one noncreature card. It’s okay if the common occupies a “slot” that was already taken; for example, you can design a bounce spell even if the set already has one at common.</p><p><b>3.</b> Choose a premiere set prior to Ikoria. Create a legendary creature intended for use in Commander that explores a particular mechanical theme of that set, like we see in modern Commander precons. Design four cards that accompany that legendary creature, then choose four non-mythic cards from that set to include in the precon.</p><p><b>4.</b> Create eight top-down cards for a set based on post-apocalyptic action movies like <i>Mad Max</i>. There must be two of each rarity, so two commons, two uncommons, and so on. You may design a maximum of four cards of each card type. Each color must be represented at least once (but it can be on a multicolored card). You may use one of the following deciduous mechanics: Vehicles, Treasure tokens, or Food tokens. You may not use any other deciduous mechanics.</p><p><b>5.</b> You’ve been tasked with leading vision design on a <i>Magic</i> set that has some kind of mechanical twist, like <i>Conspiracy</i>, <i>Battlebond</i>, and <i>Planechase</i>. Figure out what twist you’d like this set to have, then design two commons, two uncommons, two rares, and one mythic rare that play along with the twist. You may design up to three creatures and up to two of each noncreature card type. Each color must be represented at least once (but it can be on a multicolored card). You may use any number of deciduous mechanics that don’t require extra expense to be printed, so no double-faced cards etc. </p><div><br /></div>Jeremy Geisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07249133114127608655noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5479847193762153273.post-86417106429408530812021-10-06T21:55:00.000-04:002021-10-06T21:55:09.870-04:00MOXTOBER - Plot: Uncovering Caverns<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://twitter.com/wobbles" style="display: inline; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="Wobbles the Goose" border="0" data-original-height="552" data-original-width="690" height="235" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vz_9kBQ9zoE/YTBsg9VVwEI/AAAAAAAAA-4/YtBc-S95-Y0u_VqdxhOYUdvo3VvtCKD7QCLcBGAsYHQ/w294-h235/11D2C072-79D0-4275-8DCB-634B4350EE02.jpeg" width="294" /></a><p></p><div><p></p><span>It’s </span><a href="https://twitter.com/bradleyrose/status/1443232263164993538?s=20">#MTGMoxtober</a><span>! A bit of trinket text that was alluring because it was so impossible. But Joke Problems require Joke Solutions, and Unstable provided a way to solve the issue while avoiding any rules unpleasantness. While this was an elegant solution, it had the unfortunate side effect of resolving the most tantalizing design hooks that WotC had provided casual designers. So it was quite nice of them to include a new one when they released Mystery Boosters </p><p><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7UFgsBwnKH4/YV5FirH0G2I/AAAAAAAABBc/2Lptcca9L3QikPG0RrndzhO5JVMenZtQQCLcBGAsYHQ/s936/DA0CD2F5-5D14-4A37-AF4B-63D8398DBCB5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="936" data-original-width="672" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7UFgsBwnKH4/YV5FirH0G2I/AAAAAAAABBc/2Lptcca9L3QikPG0RrndzhO5JVMenZtQQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/DA0CD2F5-5D14-4A37-AF4B-63D8398DBCB5.jpeg" width="230" /></a></p><p>Now, plot boosters still need to answer the same questions that Ari posed about Contraptions:</p><ol style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;"><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Does it create fun gameplay?</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Does it work within the rules?</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Is it comprehensible and intuitive?</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Does it have sufficient design space, especially at common?</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Does it mesh well with the other themes of the set?</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Does it have resonance with the world's flavor?</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Does it appeal to many different kinds of players?</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Can it be templated with a sufficiently small word count?</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Is it novel?</li></ol><div>Fortunately, the Mechanics at the disposal of both WotC and casual designers look a lot different than they did back in 2013. Plot boosters don’t need to show up in a standard legal, black bordered set. They can be their own product, they could be in Universes Beyond, they could be digital. Even if they were to show up in a standard legal set, they could involve sideboards or external components to an extent that that sets 10 years ago weren’t really trying. The wording of the card is most reminiscent of opening story packs in games like Risk Legacy or Gloomhaven. Trying to figure out how to make a card like Planequake work in a game mode like that is too ambitious for me right now, so instead my take will focus on a Jumpstart like setting where a player might have a deck with Planequake and an included Uncovered Cavern plot booster included. </div><div><br /></div><div>My mechanic would work like this:</div><p><i style="text-align: center;">When you open a Plot Booster, remove the first card and shuffle the rest face down. Perform the actions of the first card, then uncover the next card and perform its ability. Then you may either empty your mana pool and retreat, or uncover the next card and activate its ability. You may only activate plot abilities and mana abilities during the resolution of the plot.</i></p><p>This steals a tried and true push your luck mechanic from games like Incan Gold or Mark Rosewater’s own game of scantily clad miners <a href="https://cheapass.com/free-games/gold-digger/" style="text-align: center;">Gold Digger</a>. Here’s what I’m picturing for the first card of Uncovered Canyon</p></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><div><p style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ADpGcZcckz8/YV5LJO2qQCI/AAAAAAAABBk/LAGL8m_BU3YrB5Kx1_JLOo7xiIr_W1naQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1039/CA37A8F6-EDBE-4FF6-BAC8-E57F8B2A8239.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1039" data-original-width="744" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ADpGcZcckz8/YV5LJO2qQCI/AAAAAAAABBk/LAGL8m_BU3YrB5Kx1_JLOo7xiIr_W1naQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/CA37A8F6-EDBE-4FF6-BAC8-E57F8B2A8239.jpeg" width="229" /></a></p></div></blockquote><div><p>From there, exploration of the pack is random. That means that while you could use a sealed pack for the mechanic, you could also replay it using those cards because the order would be different. For this implementation, the packs would be the start card, 4 commons, two uncommons and a rare. A common could look like:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KY_f2rLtaXM/YV5MB8KRooI/AAAAAAAABBs/VLSqQpPsKRISwaely_cDdsO9lVRGO7UogCLcBGAsYHQ/s1039/4E18F04B-6076-4682-8C0B-10E8732D5A28.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1039" data-original-width="744" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KY_f2rLtaXM/YV5MB8KRooI/AAAAAAAABBs/VLSqQpPsKRISwaely_cDdsO9lVRGO7UogCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/4E18F04B-6076-4682-8C0B-10E8732D5A28.jpeg" width="229" /></a></div><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OppMCNx-h-U/YV5MB9Me4SI/AAAAAAAABBw/KRd6vDliNmw_hatx1myAL0ffIX7Mbn6ygCLcBGAsYHQ/s1039/91755867-08F9-4C47-9DCA-4E31EFDDAACD.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1039" data-original-width="744" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OppMCNx-h-U/YV5MB9Me4SI/AAAAAAAABBw/KRd6vDliNmw_hatx1myAL0ffIX7Mbn6ygCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/91755867-08F9-4C47-9DCA-4E31EFDDAACD.jpeg" width="229" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The common effects would provide effects for off color costs or 2 generic. Homebrew rules are an easy way to spice up casual game play without needing to design new cards for your casual format. And, as recent Magic sets have relied on more and more external cards like Contraptions, Dungeons, or Lessons, the easier its become to create alternatives to what those rules mean. </div><div><br /></div><div>For example, what if for your next AFR draft, every time you’d venture into the dungeon you set in motion <a href="https://humpheh.com/magic/a/">a random Scheme</a> instead? </div><div><br /></div><div>Maybe you build a Strixhaven Cube with the alternate rule that every time you’d learn a lesson, you get to <a href="https://scryfall.com/card/pal04/11/booster-tutor">Booster Tutor</a> from your Vintage Cube instead? </div><div><br /></div><div>In my Un-set battle box, we use a Steamflogger Boss as a monarch token that replaces the card draw with assembling a contraption. </div><div><br /></div><div>These rule tweaks can be a fun way to change up an existing play experience or significantly shift a format as play continues. Who knows, a fun homebrew rules tweak might even become a standard part of the game! That was the case for Commander and, in keeping with today’s theme, the invention of en passant captures for Pawns in chess.</div><div><span face="Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif" style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;"><br /></span></div><div><span face="Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif" style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">Do you have fun homebrew rules variants that you use in casual games? Click through to see this weekend's design challenge. Your mission is to design a custom Magic card that follows the guidelines. Over the course of the weekend, give feedback to your fellow designers on their designs and incorporate their feedback to iterate on your own. I'll try to offer some feedback of my own starting on Monday.<p></p><span></span><span><a name='more'></a></span><p>It's been pointed out that the Midnight Hunt set contains a partial cycle of curses-- a rare of each color except for green. Your challenge this week is to design the green entry, i.e. a rare green card with type "Enchantment- Aura Curse" that would fit well in the Midnight Hunt environment. For bonus points, make it a DFC <i>without</i> disturb or daybound.</p><p>Good luck and have fun!</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5479847193762153273.post-78974466717795350112021-10-01T13:29:00.013-04:002021-10-01T14:43:51.324-04:00Amonkhet, Rebirth and Desert Cubes<p style="text-align: left;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div> <a href="http://Twitter.com/wobbles" style="display: inline; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="Wobbles the Goose" border="0" data-original-height="552" data-original-width="690" height="235" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vz_9kBQ9zoE/YTBsg9VVwEI/AAAAAAAAA-4/YtBc-S95-Y0u_VqdxhOYUdvo3VvtCKD7QCLcBGAsYHQ/w294-h235/11D2C072-79D0-4275-8DCB-634B4350EE02.jpeg" width="294" /></a><div>#wotcsafe<br /><p></p><span style="text-align: left;">It’s </span><a href="https://twitter.com/bradleyrose/status/1443232263164993538?s=20" style="text-align: left;">#MTGMoxtober</a><span style="text-align: left;">! A month of design prompts for the Magic creatively inclined. I love a good design prompt, and this first one “Rebirth” has me excited for the upcoming return to Kamigawa. I love when media properties return to existing worlds and show how they’ve changed and developed over time. </span><div><br /></div><div>One setting that I’m also excited to eventually revisit is Amonkhet. The initial outing was so Bolas centered that the Egyptian Mythology aspects really got sidelined or just generally poorly served by the sets themselves. Plus, the plot clearly sets us up for a sequel of Hazoret and the survivors surviving in the desert, searching for information about the pre-Bolas and looking for a new home. A little bit Raiders of the Lost Ark, a little Ten Commandments, and a lot of <span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(43, 43, 43); color: #2b2b2b; font-family: "Libre Baskerville", serif; font-size: 16px;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0195170245/ref=as_li_tl_nodl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0195170245&linkCode=as2&tag=norsemytho-20&linkId=U5JFNFR6WL2IV6S5">Geraldine Pinch’s </a></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(43, 43, 43); color: #2b2b2b; font-family: "Libre Baskerville", serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: italic; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0195170245/ref=as_li_tl_nodl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0195170245&linkCode=as2&tag=norsemytho-20&linkId=U5JFNFR6WL2IV6S5">Egyptian Mythology: A Guide to the Gods, Goddesses, and Traditions of Ancient Egypt</a>?</span> Let’s go!</div><div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XwIlmNSCDRY/YVcyIiNw0qI/AAAAAAAABAI/A8xIkJsizEQ1n7kV4sqtnOB3BkjnG_rUACLcBGAsYHQ/s444/A5FC8AB5-813A-40EB-8ECB-63A6AB1BB3D6.gif" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="444" data-original-width="276" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XwIlmNSCDRY/YVcyIiNw0qI/AAAAAAAABAI/A8xIkJsizEQ1n7kV4sqtnOB3BkjnG_rUACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/A5FC8AB5-813A-40EB-8ECB-63A6AB1BB3D6.gif" width="199" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>On the mechanical side is where it gets really interesting, because a Rebirth of Amonkhet could finally be an excuse for WotC to try and design a <a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/5f2afbaf558f22103dd1a232" style="text-align: center;">Desert Cube</a> in a standard legal set. Desert Cubes are a fascinating design challenge with the premise being that players only use the lands they draft. There isn’t a land station where you can grab more basics, but basic lands do appear in packs. Given my interest in <a href="http://goblinartisans.blogspot.com/2021/09/cubelets-mini-cubes.html?m=1" style="text-align: center;">low component cubes</a>, desert cubes are definitely in my wheelhouse and a lot of the considerations around unbalancing the colors or providing extreme curve considerations are on display in the many examples on cube cobra: <a href="https://cubecobra.com/search/Desert%20cube/0?order=date">https://cubecobra.com/search/Desert%20cube/0?order=date</a>. <b>Update! </b>The current <a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/amonkhetdesert">top result</a> of the search is even an Amonkhet themed Desert Cube by <a href="http://Twitter.com/GoblinGathering">@GoblinGathering</a>. Give him a follow!</div><div><br /></div><div>The recent re-return to Zendikar has also been a huge boon to Desert Cube design, with mdfc lands basically redefining the architecture of these cubes and providing a lot more “slots” for land in the cube. Ixalan, Innistrad and <a href="https://www.planesculptors.net/set/castmire" style="text-align: center;">Castmire</a> have dabbled with the transforming land space as well, which could have interesting potential to represent Amonkhet survivors making discoveries under the sands. But none of these sets has done away with “free basics” entirely.</div><div><br /></div><div>An alternative to just removing free lands all together would be to try replacing them with some other lands that you can get for free. This came up after Alexis Janson asked for the worst Magic formats you could get Magic players to try: </div><div><br /></div></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IAeJPLbAc3Q/YVc9E1rK2uI/AAAAAAAABAQ/GVdckjXVfwYo5IoSnXR2vkr8NK9rJuPYwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1286/CEAA10C8-4549-41A6-BF42-96770B05E3F1.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1286" data-original-width="618" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IAeJPLbAc3Q/YVc9E1rK2uI/AAAAAAAABAQ/GVdckjXVfwYo5IoSnXR2vkr8NK9rJuPYwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/CEAA10C8-4549-41A6-BF42-96770B05E3F1.jpeg" width="154" /></a></div></div></blockquote><div><div><br /></div><div>This is actually a direction I hoped they would go when they announced Ravnican Gates would be replacing basics in packs of Dragon’s Maze and I still think it would have been an interesting way to change up that draft environment. Hour of Devastation’s pain deserts are almost certainly too good to give players unlimited copies. Especially <a href="https://scryfall.com/search?q=is%3Aspikey&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name" style="text-align: center;">spikey </a>Ramunap Ruins in a world where everyone is taking lots of pain damage from their mana. What about a return to Amonkhet with free Ash Barrens but only the basics you draft? Cube Cobra actually allows you to replace or add cards to the basic lands menu when players test your cube, so those options are open to cube builders. I’d love examples of cubes that use alternate basics in the comments if you have them! </div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HpzW2bZzqBY/YVdDEkA_wBI/AAAAAAAABAY/jKZw00TRG84FswGcGcplkxpoSB7YjvW2gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1438/DBAA8A90-811F-4342-AAAC-9EF008E0DD4E.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1438" data-original-width="828" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HpzW2bZzqBY/YVdDEkA_wBI/AAAAAAAABAY/jKZw00TRG84FswGcGcplkxpoSB7YjvW2gCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/DBAA8A90-811F-4342-AAAC-9EF008E0DD4E.jpeg" width="184" /></a></div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Finally, “Is this card better than another basic land?” is an interesting way to look at <a href="http://goblinartisans.blogspot.com/2021/09/questions-i-cant-answer.html?m=1" style="text-align: center;">Ari’s 6th Question</a>. Basic Lands being free means that they’re typically the “floor” of a limited deck. We're back from hiatus with a fresh weekend design challenge. Your mission is to design a custom Magic card that follows the guidelines. Over the course of the weekend, give feedback to your fellow designers on their designs and incorporate their feedback to iterate on your own. I'll try to offer some feedback of my own starting on Monday.<p></p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p>Your challenge for this week is to design a card with disturb. Make it an uncommon creature and do something to mechanically link the front side with the back side. For bonus points, find a way to suggest that it's from a future Innistrad set rather than the current one.</p><p>Good luck and have fun!</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5479847193762153273.post-49932417832912810772021-09-21T16:46:00.001-04:002021-09-21T16:46:43.694-04:00Questions I Can't Answer<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--XaA35sbS-M/YUo3SqTf-gI/AAAAAAAASgY/-oXhpcuQNa0PyrZNXxEcV1oF4f8S4xfOACNcBGAsYHQ/s158/ari.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="158" data-original-width="158" height="158" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--XaA35sbS-M/YUo3SqTf-gI/AAAAAAAASgY/-oXhpcuQNa0PyrZNXxEcV1oF4f8S4xfOACNcBGAsYHQ/s0/ari.png" width="158" /></a></div><div><p>I considered several possibilities for what to write about here- what words of wisdom I could bring back to the design community that gave me the skills to work in R&D. The contest was an open solicitation of designs for Cube, which WotC has continued in various forms over the last two years through its Cube Spotlight Series. This has helped highlight <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-digital/spotlight-cube-series-gwen-dekkers-dekkaru-cube-2020-05-08">quirky</a> Cube designs during MTGO off seasons, although nothing has really threatened to dethrone the Vintage and Legacy cubes from their staple positions because of their high powered game play, nostalgia hits, and continual updating. Particularly over the past two years of High Power sets, these cubes have provided a great place to highlight the fun new art treatments and expensive cards that are otherwise inaccessible for most Magic players. However, I’m never going to be able to afford to build such a cube, drafting is very difficult to do via web cam and even post-pandemic the prospects of organizing a full, 8 person draft seem slim. </div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So, this got me thinking about what kinds of cubes might be more affordable and friendly for smaller groups. One thing that I have been able to do via webcam is to build Cube sealed decks via Cube Cobra and play those against friends near and far. The deck building tools on the site make it easy to generate pools, but buying or proxying large cubes is still labor intensive. This resulted in going back to an old invitational format: <a href="https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Duplicate_Sealed">Duplicate Sealed</a>. Duplicate Sealed is really neat in these days of more web cam play because players can assemble their own copies of the pool independent of one another. It’s also just a card designer’s playhouse because small pools mean you can create truly wacky scenarios, <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/event-coverage/building-duplicate-sealed-card-pool-2006-05-10-0">like One With Nothing being a playable card.</a> After all, restrictions breed creativity! With that in mind, I set out to create the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_viable_product">minimum viable product</a> of a limited pool that created a lot of depth out of as few cards as possible. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The 2006 Invitational sealed pool clocked at 105 cards and ~$100 dollars. Which is fine if your Wizards or already have the cards. I wanted to go smaller, so I thought about some of the mono-colored cubes I had built back in 2016: <a href="http://goblinartisans.blogspot.com/2016/10/bouillon-cubes.html?m=1">http://goblinartisans.blogspot.com/2016/10/bouillon-cubes.html?m=1</a>. Mono color cubes are nice because every card is “playable” without using a lot of slots for fixing mana, although they do need solid themes to avoid being too Soupy. For ultra-small cubes, it’s (usually) important to not wind up drafting below 23/24 playable cards, and going mono color helps with that.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">To start, I chose Red to build around:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/boxogoblin" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="457" data-original-width="626" height="234" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QJvQUbDWu0E/YTL389oRrRI/AAAAAAAAA_I/taTqfMiF-v0u98JrC21wGozdVLDMKOz_QCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/79F2860C-942E-482F-84AF-17AE006AB3E7.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><h3 style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/boxogoblin">Box of Free Range Goblins</a></h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Red was a natural fit, because it’s really well suited to pull in lenticular cards that can fit into aggro or combo or control. Mogg War Marshall is a great example, dumping lots of bodies on the board for pump spells, sacrifice combos or blockers. This cube was designed to be played with minimal rules modifications, except maybe the Dib draft variant I described in the overview. Plenty of card options exist for a Goblin themed mini-cube and it’s easy to grow the size. I stuck with 60 because it means that you could use a 100 card deck box to store this, plenty of mountains, and some goblin tokens.<div><br /></div><div>Next Up was Blue</div><div>Blue is trickier because the control elements are much stronger and the aggro elements are non-interactive (Lord of Atlantis mirrors? Yuck). Instead, I went in on a strong Mill theme.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/612f00b74683a21044928cbb" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img alt="Mini Maniac" border="0" data-original-height="457" data-original-width="626" height="234" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Stw7JdpYlhs/YTMQ0qxRhoI/AAAAAAAAA_Q/X-Bkwzncs2sB505K3OWa6IBBtTXRMbqWwCLcBGAsYHQ/w320-h234/D0BE8F9B-4003-4DFA-BB08-5723852E1C5E.jpeg" title="Mini Maniac" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /><h3 style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/612f00b74683a21044928cbb" style="text-align: center;">Honey, I Shrunk the Cube </a></h3><div><br /></div><div>Laboratory Maniac gets 4 copies here, but otherwise this is a straight forward cube design. The Maniacs open a nice tension between aggressively milling your opponent or yourself, so I wanted there to be a critical mass to draft. This cube is slightly larger (75 cards) for two reasons. First, like with arc slogger in the goblin cube, opening up options for deck size seems like a fun place for these cubes to explore so providing a few extra playable means that maybe you build bigger than necessary to avoid decking. The second was thinking about this cube being played by more than two players. With 3 players, each player drafts 25 cards from the entire cube. That’s cutting it pretty tight, but if you drop the minimum deck size by 5 for each extra player you could easily build a 15 land/20 spell deck from that pool. 4 players get 18 spells and 12 lands to build exactly a 30 card deck. Not ideal, but it got me thinking. </div><div><br /></div><div>Green</div><div>Green loves lands and ramp. How could I encourage players to play extra lands in their cube deck?</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/612b91083ab138103a0c41ca" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="452" data-original-width="616" height="235" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T6bBYAZHq0E/YTMVAzvoSII/AAAAAAAAA_Y/H0Iw9q0uRUYAPfaBmsKAwmkGy8i6U8FVQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/559A8B8F-223B-4420-98FA-FE3BA7947349.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/612b91083ab138103a0c41ca">Pinnacle of Perfection</a></h3><div><br /></div><div>Here, each player starts with a Helix Pinnacle emblem that lets them win once they’ve spend 100 mana on it. If you were just playing one land a turn, that's turn 14 with 5 mana to spare. But you’re not just playing lands! This deck has elf and wall subthemes, ramp, lessons, and some big creatures just to keep players honest. All in just 60 cards! Because consistently hitting land drops is never completely dead with the Pinnacle, it felt ok to give players only 22 cards to build with. I also describe the option of Rochester drafting, which is much easier with the smaller pool. I’m particularly interested to see what happens with more than 2 players!</div><div><br /></div><div>Black and White I’m grouping together, because these to rely on a similar gimmick to work.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/612ffd6e0d62001036b21249" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="467" data-original-width="582" height="257" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oF6AO_UVUcs/YTMXJMoGWLI/AAAAAAAAA_g/Z608aQLSYAsYEphL6klFW93P8B-5v8w2ACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1F840062-7F36-4F98-BBED-46C5F9EE6F40.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><h3 style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/612fabef6196fc518d088cf1">Basic Rats</a></h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/612ffd6e0d62001036b21249" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="457" data-original-width="626" height="234" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ev2yD33BbVo/YTMXJZmJWxI/AAAAAAAAA_k/tHmAPw4bWc8RoBHKfvh58xkuWfeOeslwACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/B6353540-9166-46C6-9C23-8F5FFCA9F6B6.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div></div><h3 style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/612ffd6e0d62001036b21249">Basic Dinos</a></h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">These two cheat their card size by giving players the option of unlimited basic creatures in the form of Pestilence Rats and Imposing Vantasaur respectively. Pestilence Rats is helpful because it’s the only scaling rate that’s still cheap (20 cents are the time of this article) and it has a fixed toughness. That means there’s a much wider array of kill spells and that other creatures can stay relevant competing with the rats. Meanwhile, Imposing Vantasaur is a <a href="https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/8/6/860a9ba3-e4c4-4af9-bdfe-1ada39289fd5.jpg?1562919860">Conch</a> card. Conch is my go to when thinking about a multifaceted card because of the amazing <a href="https://www.cubecobra.com/cube/list/conch">Conch Cube</a> which uses a similar gimmick. Not every card can Conch, it ideally needs to be flexible, not overwhelming, and have multiple hooks for potential decks. In this minicube, we use every part of the Vantasaur: cycling, dinosaur tribal, toughness/vigilance matters, white reanimation all are big themes. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So those are some examples! My development of it led it too far away from the deck's theme to actually use it in the deck, but originally it had a <u>Chameleon Colossus</u> ability as well. Here's the hard part:</div><div><br /></div><div>3) Tweak that card to meet the following two criteria:</div><div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><div style="text-align: left;">a) Make sure that it would be a good fit for at least one other commander deck with a substantively different theme than the one you initially designed it for.</div></blockquote></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><div><p style="text-align: left;">b) Adjust the power level of the card so that it's not necessarily an auto-include in the deck if someone else were designing the deck with the same commander and theme.</p></div></blockquote><p>Power level is a skill that we amateur designers frequently cop out on, as evaluating and adjusting is something more suited to the pro-level players in Play Design (fka Development), but it's a very useful skill to have.</p><p>Finally, </p><p>4) Go ahead and write a little bit about your process in the comments. How did you approach the design? How did you adjust it for the second two requirements? </p><div>Good luck, have fun, and we'll see what you came up with come Monday.</div>zefferalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13845251416516553492noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5479847193762153273.post-68100519012199849602021-08-14T21:36:00.001-04:002021-08-14T21:36:33.131-04:00Weekend Design Challenge 081421 - Multicolor X Spell<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kkcmcp1BKLI/XkekPps2J5I/AAAAAAAAE7I/5elkoP_clxg8AoXBCfOs9l_ZrVDPkSmfgCPcBGAYYCw/s172/steel-draft.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="155" data-original-width="172" height="155" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kkcmcp1BKLI/XkekPps2J5I/AAAAAAAAE7I/5elkoP_clxg8AoXBCfOs9l_ZrVDPkSmfgCPcBGAYYCw/s0/steel-draft.png" width="172" /></a></div>Hey Artisans!
