Greetings, artisans! Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review, if someone volunteers to render the cards.
Design an Eldrazi card for a future set.
Future shifted border, full art frame (like blade of the sixth pride)
ReplyDeleteKozilek's Aberration {2/R}{2/R}{2/R}
Creature- Eldrazi (common)
7/1
Devoid, for me, is a flavor miss. I would have advocated a path similar to this.
DeleteRed frame/color identity?
DeleteCertainly.
DeleteIf possible, I'd prefer a hybrid frame, fading from red (at the top) to colorless or transparent (at the bottom). In fact, if the future shifted frame can't support this, I'd be ok with ditching it and finding one that can.
DeleteI couldn't get colorless precisely, but did a little tinkering and came up with this:

That is very pretty :) thank you jenesis
DeleteSince I already went to the trouble, I suppose I'll do all the renders this week.
DeleteNot too many this weekend. How do you post the renders so that Jay can get to them? I've never really gotten a definitive answer
DeletePersonally I just email them.
DeleteI would have volunteered if I knew how to get them to him.
DeleteI just put them in a dropbox file and leave the link here.
DeleteDropbox link, tumblr link, imgur link, and emails are the most common ways people send me renders.

ReplyDeleteLegendary Creature - Eldrazi (mythic)
When you cast ~, gain control of target permanent.
Vigilance
If @ would deal combat damage to a creature, instead gain control of that creature.
When @ is put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile every permanent not owned by its controller.
10/10
~ and @ both mean CARDNAME, correct?
DeleteAnd I hope "its controller" refers to that permanent's controller, not Zogekov, or it'd be ludicrously OP even by Eldrazi standards...
~ means CARDNAME, @ means LEGENDNAME; it's the shorthand MSE uses for something like Arashi's second ability, where it just says 'Arashi' rather than 'Arashi, the Sky Asunder'.
DeleteAnd yes, it's meant to exile each permanent for which the controller and owner do not match. Suggestions on a better wording?
@czynksi: thanks for the MSE tip!
DeleteFor the secondary ability, would something like this help:
Delete"When @ is put into a graveyard from anywhere, each player exiles all permanents they control, but don't own."
It's a simple flip of the words but it reads a little more clearly to me.
Sure, I'll go with that.

ReplyDeleteCreature - Eldrazi Vampire (R)
XXBB, Sacrifice CARDNAME: Put X 1/1 colorless Eldrazi Scion creature tokens onto the battlefield.
3/3
To me this card has too many human-like characteristics to just be an Eldrazi, so I designed an advanced stage carrier thrall, who has begun to take on some Eldrazi-like characteristics herself. For OGW or perhaps a supplemental product that features Zendikar during this time.
I like that she explodes into loads of scions, that's pretty grotesque. I think the activation cost is too conservative, though.
DeleteWhat if she could inflict this "scion-explosion" on others though?
I wanted to make it a single X, I really did, but I couldn't find any existing card precedent that said "this effect is okay when stapled onto a creature." Especially since you can activate it at instant speed and the tokens are themselves mana sources.
DeleteFor flavor reasons, I don't want to be able to chestburst any random creature, but "Sacrifice an Eldrazi" could be interesting. Maybe a flavor aspect of this hypothetical set is that all races have "corrupted" versions, not just Vampires.
If it's going to be usable on multiple creatures, I'd tie the number to their power (or toughness, depending on whether it's important that it could upgrade Spawn to Scions).
DeleteGreat point about the tokens being mana sources, that aspect slipped my mind.
DeleteA way to trim that activation cost could be to limit it to any time you could play a sorcery.
For the record "chestburst" needs to be a thing that magic does.

Ingest
Whenever one or more cards an opponent controls gets exiled, you draw a card.
2/3
Whenever one or more cards an opponent owns becomes exiled*
DeleteTHIS is what ingest is missing! You know, relevance...
DeleteI really like that you limited it to a single card drawn per exile action. That's pretty smart

ReplyDeleteApostate of Kruphix 1UG
ReplyDeleteCreature- Gorgon (u)
Whenever Apostate of Kruphix deals combat damage to a player, reveal cards from the top of that player's library until you reveal a land card. Put that card on top and exile the rest.
"When Emrakul consumes even Kruphix is blind."
2/4
Neat mix of effects but I wonder how miserable an opponent would feel drawing nothing but lands for the rest of the game :/
DeleteWhat if it was "Target opponent plays with the top card of his or her library revealed. You may play the top card of that library if it's a land card."? Killer name, though.
DeleteWhat if it just exiled the land?
DeleteI'm also not seeing (heh) why this is a non-Eldrazi Gorgon, instead of just an Eldrazi.
Our Lady of Insanity
ReplyDelete5B
Devoid
Insanity (Whenever an opponent casts a spell, exile the top card of their library, and counter it unless they pay X where X is the exiled card's converted mana cost.)
5/5
I wanted another Eldrazi mechanic that felt violating. Annihilate messed with opponents battlefield, ingest with library, so I wanted something that messed with opponents hand or spell casting.
I also considered something that cycled, forcing opponent to discard and draw, or evil cascade which counters spell and replaces it with a random cheaper one some of the time.
Evil cascade sounds kind of fun (maybe), but Insanity doesn't, at least not as a keyword. I would feel either paralyzed or helpless in the face of that ability, even if I could play around it by leaving mana open. It's probably a neat idea for a rare, though.

DeleteTHe unfortunate thing about "violation" mechanics is that they're a really hard sell. Certainly there are ways to do it well (not counting Insanity out just yet) but there's a razor's edge to walk. Balancing the "feel", power level, and the right amount of disgust is always going to be tough.
DeleteI like that insanity uses the opponent's own deck and that it won't always work.
Insanity, as it stands, would be oppressive in multiples. What if you made "insanity" a reminder word (like rally or raid) that ties together multiple mechanics that reference paying the mana cost of the top card?
So insane it doesn't even have a typeline? :P
DeleteOne card with Insanity and everything is inconsistent and expensive. Two and you have to assume most spells will fail. Three and they will fail.
DeleteI also considered a similar mechanic bouncing the spell to their hand, so they're frustrated but not locked out. But I worried it was too weak. I assumed this would be like annhilator, on expensive Eldrazi, where getting even one i the board wad a big deal.
DeleteI also considered a similar mechanic bouncing the card to their hand, so it's frustrating but didn't lock them out. But I was worried it was too weak, especially if it allows lands to do nothing at all.
DeleteI assumed this would be like annihilate, going on expensive Eldrazi where even one is a big deal. Although I suppose, having cheaper Eldrazi is probably necessary, so maybe it would have been better to go with a version that could be used in multiple on cheap Eldrazi.

Whenever an opponent casts a spell with odd converted mana cost, scry 2.
Whenever you cast a spell with odd converted mana cost, draw a card.
1/3
Weird Eldrazi are weird.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in the "just can't even" mechanic, but I wonder why they cut it. I imagine that you're on the right track, in that this card doesn't "harm" an opponent who triggers it. A negative incentive vs penalty seems like the best way to ensure both players continue playing the game.
It was probably hard to develop reasonably when you can't add or remove one mana to a cost.

Magnate of Isolation 9
ReplyDeleteCreature - Eldrazi (R)
Menace (This creature can’t be blocked except by two or more creatures.)
When you cast Magnate of Isolation, each opponent chooses a creature they control. Exile each creature you don’t control not chosen this way.
9/10
Have a bunch of other ideas but this is one of my favourite. Also Magnate is a latin word for "a great man" in the similar fashion to "Lord."
Also you can see some other designs that me and Inanimate brainstormed at the below imgur album.
