CCDD 062514—Master Fire / Life / Science / Death / Nature

Cool Card Design of the Day
6/25/2014 - I think I designed these while looking for ways to interact with Theros' +1/+1 counters.

This should be pretty good with heroic, ordeals and monsters. It's not terrible on its own.

Life gain is a lot less exciting than burn, but instant speed makes this a combat trick

This and the next don't count the +1/+1 counters, but they do play well with the creatures you've invested in.

This is a spell I'd like to see reprinted in a core set or two.

  1. Depending on the format, Master Fire could range from pretty good to insane, even by itself. Might need to be uncommon, considering how well they stack.

    1. Yup. Might need to cost more.

    2. It's also awesome with deathtouchers (like Fall of the Hammer).

  2. I think Master Death feels out of place with this cycle. I want to say Master Nature does as well, but (like you said) I can see it being reprinted in a future set or two.

Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature. Another target creature gets -X/-X until the end of turn where X is the number of +1/+1 counters on the first target (wording need work)

I think we can justify situational removal for two mana. If we wanted to limit the power of this (or possibly the cycle itself) we can add a color restriction. "Target black creature gets..."

Overall, I like the flavor aspect of the cycle's design.

    1. I like Master Death. It's definitely not too weak, being strictly better than Steal Strength.

    2. I should say, I like your Master Death, Possums.

  3. I don't know if there is a good template for Master Fire. As written, it's ambiguous which creature it counts counters on. (Though it's obvious in terms of play intention)

I'd also be a bit concerned about Master Science power-wise, since scry scales so well. Scry 2 is literally exponentially better than scry 1 and scry 3 is exponentially better again.

    1. Good catch. There are definitely templates for it, but you may be right they're all awkward.

I disagree that scry 2 is exponentially better than scry 1. It's definitely more than twice as good, though.

  4. +1/+1 Counters Matter has always been one good creative hook away from really exciting me. I'm definitely interested, though.
