Weekend Design Challenge 011520 - L-A-N-D

Happy Friday, Artisans! Click through to see this weekend's design challenge. Your mission is to design a custom magic card that follows the guidelines. Over the course of the weekend, give feedback to your fellow designers on their designs and incorporate their feedback to iterate on your own. I'll try to offer some feedback of my own starting on Monday.

It looks like Kaldhiem includes a full uncommon cycle of ten "spell lands": single-color sources that enter the battlefield tapped but can sacrifice for a multicolor spell effect, like Axgard Armory and Bretagard Stronghold. As of this writing seven have been spoiled, leaving only the B -> WB, B -> BR, and U -> UB designs to be revealed. Pick one of those and design it. Bonus points for somehow synergizing with one of that color pair's Limited themes (WB Angels / "second spell", BR Berserkers / boast, UB Zombies / snow).

Good luck and have fun!

    1. Bleh, I'm bad at math. Shave 1 off of Bridge's activation cost.

    2. These are solid! The BR one is my favorite. It mostly reads "destroy target blocking creature" which is a powerful ability and has great (though subtle) synergy with boast. The gameplay would be even better if the effect was an instant instead of an on-board trick, but that's unavoidable given it's a land. Starnheim is reasonable too, good for triggering double-spell in the late game and quite thematic. Karfell wasn't a hit for me since it seems fiddly and not very blue, but I appreciate the effort toward the bonus.

    1. You might want to add a "no mana abilities" clause here because otherwise this doubles all your mana for the rest of the turn.

    2. Oofff, yes, a non mana ability sounds right, nice catch!

    3. The effect is very cool and synergizes great with boast. I don't think it belongs on this land, though, for two reasons. First, it doesn't justify the color identity. "Copy an activated ability" only exists on artifacts and Tawnos, but I don't think I could make a case for it being a multicolor BR effect. Second, it's a Johnny effect and the spell lands-- because they're built around the option value of a painful exchange-- are Spike-oriented cards. The printed versions of these lands tend to have relatively common effects that provide value on their own.

    4. Agreed. Good analysis. I initially wanted it to tie into units that have attacked, then to tapped units you control, but indeed it should synergize but not require something else to give value.

Still I liked the flavor of a hall where everyone is boasting and boasting leading to exagerations.
