Weekend Design Challenge 090421 - Average Card

Hey Artisans! Click through to see this weekend's design challenge. Your mission is to design a custom Magic card that follows the guidelines. Over the course of the weekend, give feedback to your fellow designers on their designs and incorporate their feedback to iterate on your own. I'll try to offer some feedback of my own starting on Monday.

Based on my extremely scientific research, the average Magic card is:

  • uncommon
  • mana value 3
  • a creature
  • exactly 1 color
  • first printed in 2010 (specifically, as part of the Magic 2011 core set)
  • exactly 1 line break in its rules text
  • name begins with the letters LO
Design such a card. For bonus points, make your design somehow further convey the feeling of averageness.

Good luck and have fun!

  1. Modal Citizen - 2{G}
    Creature - Human (Uncommon)
    You may pay 4{G} instead of Modal Citizen's mana cost. If you do, it enters the battlefield with three +1/+1 counters on it.

    1. Meant to write "4{G}{G}", not "4{G}". (Darn this platform, no comment editing...)

  2. I wasn't sure if "exactly 1 line break in its rules text" meant a pair of abilities, or rules text that was no longer than two lines. I went with the latter to be safe.

    Lowland Ascetic 2W (UNCOMMON)
    Creature - Giant Monk 3/3
    Creatures with the greatest power or least power can’t attack or block.
    His spell assures that the mightiest of the kingdom and the lowliest of their subjects know only peace.

    1. It means the former-- "line break" is the spacing between two abilities.

    2. I have to say, i really enjoy this card. Stopping wmall creatures from attacking or blocking feels a tad bit "not mono-white".

      How does this work with creatures that are tied for power?
      (also, this with godhead of awe and an anthem is evil as heck.)

  3. Loathed Vampire || {2}{B}
    Creature - Vampire
    Kicker {1}{B}
    When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, if it was kicked, Each opponent loses 2 life and you gain 2 life.
    2/3

    You did tell Nich that "line break" is the spacing between *Two* abilities. but kicker is always done on at least two lines. and i felt kicker was just the fit for the average card.

  4. Loaming Mole {2}{G}
    Creature - Mole (U) [M11]
    Forestwalk
    When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, shuffle any number of cards from your graveyard into your library, then scry 2.
    2/2

  5. On an unrelated note, and since I don’t know where else and how to post this, I came across a neat idea “recently”:

    When magic depicts someone getting cursed (with the exception of the actual curse cards), they are often cursed with black mana. which is kinda weird. So I thought, “what about the other colors? What would cursing with white mana look like?” And so on. And I felt it lead to a lot of design fun. E.g. a red planeswalker that was cursed with white.
