CCDD 032714—Lazarus Vine

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/27/2014 - Morph triggers are way too tempting.

  1. The gold cost is a good safety measure, but I imagine it could be {1}{G} (at uncommon) without being too strong. I'm not sure whether it reads better to have the Lazarus cost and the morph cost the same or not.

    Would you make a vertical cycle?

    1. I tried a few things, and found that the resurrection cost needs to be higher or more demanding than the morph cost because the effect of using it is so much greater, usually.

      While it's not crazy complicated, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with any version of this at common. Testing could easily change my mind.

    2. Let me alternatively propose:

      Lazarus Baloth {4}{G}
      Creature - Baloth
      When ~ dies face-up, you may pay {3}. If you do, return it to the battlefield face-down and tapped.
      Morph {1}{G}
      4/3

    3. Lazarus Treefolk 4G
      Creature - Treefolk
      Reach
      When ~ dies face-up, you may pay 1G. If you do, return it to the battlefield face-down.
      Morph 4GG
      4/5

      I want to play with all these cards and see!

  2. I think I'd rather see a non-mana cost. As is, this plays the same as a normal morph in that they're supposed to kill a facedown creature when you have no mana. If you have to discard cards or something then you get to mix up the gameplay and this acts as the trap it promises for opponents who are afraid of your morphs.

    1. You know, I started it that way and then was looking at again and decided it needed it. I think in isolation it needs the mana cost, but in the context of a set full of morphs people do want to kill while they're face-down, the trigger needs to be free.

      Funny, usually when I reconsider a design from another day I can improve it with my more distant perspective, but this time I spoiled it because I forgot the impetus for the design in the first place. Note to self.

    2. you may discard a green or black card perhaps? Or make the morph cost 3GG, and remove the mana cost.

    1. Sudden Sapling 4G
      Instant
      Put a 4/4 green Treefolk creature token on the battlefield.
      Mask 1G (You may cast this card face down as a 2/2 creature for 3 mana. When it dies, you may cast it for its mask cost.)

  4. If/when Morph gets brought back, I'm excited to see how they'd tweak it. This is a pretty good guess.
