Weekend Art Challenge 010215—Dragon

Weekend Art Challenge
Greetings, artisans! Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review, if someone volunteers to render the cards.

  1. Art #1: Dragonstorm. (Somebody had to say it.)

I'll do the renders this week.

  2. Karl Kopinski art.

    Mujinra, the Inferno Sky (rare)
    4RG
    Legendary Creature - Dragon
    Flying, trample
Whenever a Dragon you control attacks, it deals damage equal to its power to target creature with flying an opponent controls.

    1. Trample is a little over doing it, I think. It's already insta-plummeting upon attacking

    2. The Trample won't do much, but will come up every now and then. WOTC often does that sort of thing on mythics, throw on an on color keyword that won't be relevant often. I like it here.

My only suggestion would be to change the title part of the card name to "the Sky Hunter" to really sell the Green part.

    Legendary Creature- Dragon

Whenever a dragon you control attacks, spells cost your opponents an additional 2 to cast until end of turn.

    1. Until the beginning of your next turn?

    2. I'm quite sure the second art, if one confronts the Siege cycle arts and the already spoiled rare legendary Dragons, can be deduced to be the RG Dragon. (UW dragon is the one shown on the Blue siege)
Aside fromt that, which doesn't take anything off your design, I'm not really in love with the ability you chose. It just doesn't do much. If slow your opponent only in your turn, after attack. If the opponent has to interact at instant speed during your turn, I don't see why she shouldn't cast the spell before your combat in the vast majority of cases, essentially defeating the purpose of the ability itself.
I could see extending the ability to your opponent's next turn - "until you next turn" - but maybe then it becomes too oppressive (and has memory issues)

    3. Oh, I wrote this before you wrote about "until the beginning of your next turn". My considerations stand :).

    Birth of dragons
    3RR
    Legendary
Put 2 2/2 red Dragon creature token with flying onto the battlefield. It has "Red: This creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn.". They gain haste until the end of the turn.

They were wondrous, dazzling, exquisite. They were dragons the likes of which he had never seen.- Sharkan vol

    1. I mean Rare instead of legendary ofcourse

    2. What kind of spell is it, sorcery?

    3. eeeh... what do you think is a good idea?

      Delete
    4. Templating nitpick: it's easier to just say "with flying and haste".

Otherwise, very cool. Wouldn't shock me to see this at uncommon in a set like Fate Reforged.

    1. I know this ability is in red (even recently with Rollick of Abandon) but it feels strange to me - I've always processed as being something black if it can be done on opponent's creatures. It's probably only a problem of mine :)
That said, if it is a red ability, I can't see where green offers something at all, aside from the somewhat redundant trample.

Each dragon card in your hand gains Dash 1R.

    1. Is this mythic? It makes your bombs slightly better, but only the ones still in your hand.

    2. As a timmy/johnny I really like this. Fun and clever design.
Maybe Evan Jones is right, it could be Rare, but it's nuances.

    3. I don't like the idea of printing a better version of Sneak Attack.

This is also a card that, like Tinker and Stoneforge Mystic, constrains all future development of a whole type of card (in this case Dragons). Perhaps instead of granting them Dash 1R it could grant them Dash for 2 less than their mana cost?

Also, nitpicky thing, it should be (probably) dragon creature card in your hand, or dragon permanent card, but granting the non-permanent dragons (such as Nameless Inversion) Dash doesn't make sense.

    1. I realize, after looking at this, that this is pretty aggressive, so I'm going to up the cost to 2UURR.

    2. Is this rare or mythic? Utvara Hellkite does this (and better) but it costs 8. Maybe the second cost is more comfortable, but it's development job. I like the design, elegant and to the point.

    3. I think 2UURR is still quite aggressively costed. I thiiiiiink this wants to be mythic, but could be rare in the right set. It depends on how many ways there are to interact with this in limited.

Search your library for up to X Dragon creature cards and put them onto the battlefield. Then shuffle your library.

    2. X = 1 fetching out Bogardan Hellkite etc. seems pretty strong. Maybe not broken, but I'd sure try it in Modern.

  9. Art # 1 (zoomed in on the foreground dragon if possible)

    Warsurge Hellkite 4RR
    Creeature - Dragon (M)
    Flying
Charge Attack (T: At the beginning of your next upkeep, this creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn. Activate this ability as a sorcery.)
Whenever Warsurge Hellkite attacks for the first time each turn, if it is charged, untap all creatures you control. After this phase, these is an additional combat phase.

    Tempest of Teeth 2R
    Enchantment (r)
Colorless creatures you control get +1/+1, have flying, and are dragons.

  11. Temper of the Wilds 4G
    Sorcery (U)
CARDNAME deals 5 damage to each creature with flying. If R was spent to cast CARDNAME, CARDNAME deals 5 damage to each player. If U was spent to cast CARDNAME, creatures you control lose flying until end of turn.

    1. Art #1, providing a narrow flying answer that gets better in 3 colors. I think this is a pretty good sideboard card against dragons and Abomination of Gudul heavy Sultai decks though.

    1. Slight nitpick: "You" never deal damage to an opponent. I would guess you mean "A source you control deals damage to an opponent"?
