Weekend Art Challenge 09232016 -- Lozanox

Weekend Art Challenge
Greetings, Artisans! Go ahead and click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though if there's any ambiguity as to what your final submission is, I'll make my best guess when doing the renders.

Design a card that fits in a normal expansion but has extra potential for including in a cube or commander deck.

Good luck, have fun, and enjoy your weekend.

When ~ EtB, target opponent may search your library for a card with the same name and cast it w/o paying its mana cost. Shuffle your library.

    1. This card would warp the metagame so radically lol I'm in

  2. ! 1R
    Instant (C)
Target creature gains +3/+0 and haste until the end of turn.
Punctuate - Whenever a creature you spent five or more red mana to cast enters the battlefield, you may cast ! from your graveyard without paying its mana cost targeting that creature.

    1. Actually it's probably uncommon if it isn't in a Commander set

Punctuate - Whenever a creature you spent five or more red mana to cast enters the battlefield, you may exile ! from your graveyard to give that creature +3/+0 and haste until end of turn.

      Blue ?
      Green .
      Black *

    4. Awesome, though I don't see how Black isn't . and green * (Period representing finality and an asterisk representing a "wild" character)

    5. It's a toss up. I was thinking . For green because it's a natural conclusion to a sentence and it emphasizes Insistance. "I'm playing Silvos, Period."

Meanwhile blank gets * more in a qualifying, record book sort of way. "I'm playing Viscara*

*Doped up with performance enhancing magic"

    6. That makes a lot of sense! Argument withdrawn. :)

When "" enters the battlefield if U was used to cast it, draw a card. If R was used, it gains haste until end of turn.

    1. If hybrid gold ever makes a comeback, this seems like a cute card to do it with.

    2. Would it be worth it to just make the card cost 2G? You're already pretty incentized to pay RGU for it

Whenever CARDNAME deals combat damage to an opponent, it deals that much damage to each creature and Planeswalker you don't control.
At the beginning of the end step, sacrifice CARDNAME.

Whenever another creature you control deals damage to an opponent, if CARDNAME is untapped, you may tap it. If you do, return target card from your graveyard to your hand.

    1. Might as well put defender on...

    2. Couldn't find a satisfactory twist on that one, so this is my pitch instead:

      Gourd of Notions 4G
      Creature - Treefolk Spirit
When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, you may search your library or graveyard for a Legendary card and put it into your hand. (If you searched your library, shuffle it.)

    3. So, it's a better Thalia's Lancers?

    4. Fie! How has Time of Need become white? I knew I should've paid better attention to Eldritch Moon.

At the beginning of each end step, if no spells were cast this turn, put two +1/+1 counters on ~.

    1. Is it? Both the trample and the trigger seem G/Rish territory to me. Cool to Vial (or similar effect) this in.

    2. I retract that. I was suggesting this wants to be in a draw-go deck, but since it checks *every* end step, instants don't have any advantage over sorceries (except that you can keep countermagic up and activate an artifact instead).

    3. You can still cast instants at the end step after the ability finishes resolving.

I see this as blue or WU. It's a Landstill card.

RG, discard a creature card: double Drox's power and toughness until end of turn.
WB: return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.

    Creature - Elemental (R)
CARDNAME's power and toughness are each equal to the number of different names among lands you control.

  9. Sprouted Warriors
    6R Mythic
    Creature - Elemental
    7/7
    Trample
Whenever ~ becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, it deals 7 damage to that player.
Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, create a tapped token that's a copy of it.

For some reason I have a vision of a LOT of these sprouting out of the ground. But I'm not sure about the rest of the card.

    1. What's the connection between these two abilities?

      Delete
    2. The second one means opponents want to use kill spells on it and the first one means that's hard to do?

I just assumed if a big creature was going to show in commander it would benefit from some resilience, but maybe it would be better without the first ability, that's not very central to the card.

    3. Because it clones itself, spot removal's not very good on it anyway (see: the "Pack Rat in Limited" problem). Though if you remove the first ability, it's just a better Giant Adephage.

    4. Oops, missed Giant Adephage. Well, I accidentally redesign things all the time *shrug*

    1. Doesn't fit the art.

      How about:

      Four-Armed Elemental 5RG
      Creature - Elemental (R)
      Double Strike
~ must be blocked by 4 creatures.
      2/8

      Delete
    2. So if your opponent has 4+ creatures, they must choose 4 of them and block? They can't block otherwise? They can't choose not to block? If they have 3- creatures, can they block?

      Delete
    3. Effectively an unblockable 4/8. But for seven mana, that's probably fine.

  11. Grozaran, the Ancient
    2RG
    Legendary Creature- Treefolk Elemental
    Haste
Whenever Grozoroth attacks, put a +1+1 counter on it for each other attacking creature you control.
If Grozoroth has more than 5 power, Grozoroth gains Trample
If Grozoroth has more than 10 power, Grozoroth gains Indestructible

    1. rarity?
Does this need to be red?

      Delete
    2. Should probably be a Mythic. Trample and Haste are both in Red's wheelhouse and there is some precedent to this sort of card with Rubblebelt Raiders in RG, with Trample being the Green part and Haste being red (focus on attacking is also pretty red). Last time we saw haste on a Green was on Strangleroot Geist so it could be mono-Green but I feel that this card fits better in the RG role than mono Green
