CCDD 052011—Disturbing Resemblance

Cool Card Design of the Day
5/20/2011 - Rise from the Grave was one of many solid flavor hits from Magic 2010. Very cool that the creature comes back as an evil zombie version of whatever it was. New Phyrexia had me thinking about horror tropes and I kept coming back to the good guys encountering the zombified version of their former friend/mother/lover and being extra terrified. Hence, Disturbing Resemblance:

  1. This is flavorful, and it would be interesting in a tribal set.

I like how even though it's only 4 cc as opposed to the standard 5cc, it's balanced by the fact that it only gets the opponent's creature.

However, it needs some way of dealing with memory issues. I'm sure some players will forget about the protection.

Giving protection doesn't seem to be a black ability. It's not a serious breach of black's fundamental limitations, and I think it's ok in a top-down card card like this, but a similar flavor could be achieved with "this can't be blocked by creatures of its printed creature types."

The phrase "Printed creature types" seems clear enough, but another way is "It becomes a black Zombie in addition to its other colors and types, and it can't be blocked by non-Zombie creatures that share a type with it." ..hmm maybe that's a bit long
