CCDD 092117—Sun-Crowned Hunters & Hadrosaur Pack

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/15/2017 - I wanted to design a couple of enrage dinosaurs to see what space was left unmined. The idea that stuck with me was that of a tiny dino that your opponent has to decide if they really want to enrage or just let through. The ability I wanted to use was already on Sun-Crowned Hunters but it has completely different meaning on a large creature, so:

CCDD 092017—territorial

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/20/2017 - It was mentioned on the mothership that monstrosity was briefly considered for Ixalan's dinosaur mechanic. I think enrage is great and wouldn't question that choice, but this still got me thinking about other ways we could express dinosaurs mechanically.

This idea started as when-you've-got-enough-lands-all-your-dinos-become-monstrous, so that we could have dinosaurs spread across the mana curve, but still become huge if you give them room to grow unrestricted.

CCDD 091917—Stalking Clanodon

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/19/2017 - I found this art and wanted to play with the idea of a flash blocker that could only be played as a surprise blocker.

CCDD 091417—Invade Mind

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/14/2017 - Continuing from yesterday's theme of black playing cards that don't belong to it, that seems like a perfect thing to pair with discard.

Wednesday, September 13, 2017

CCDD 091317—Bad Memory

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/13/2017 - Yawgmoth's Will as a saboteur effect.

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

CCDD 091217—imbue

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/12/2017 - Imbue is a mechanic where you cast a spell on a creature and that creature is imbued with the ability to cast that spell on itself once more.

Monday, September 11, 2017

CCDD 091117—Fueled by Pain

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/15/2017 - The impetus of this design was to punish your opponent for hurting you and reward you for playing into black's masochism.

CCDD 090717—Great Hunter of Atliki & Theropod Mates

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/7/2017 - Here are a couple fairly straight-forward dinos.
Because dinos.

Wednesday, September 6, 2017

CCDD 090617—prism

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/6/2017 - Prism is going to look underwhelming in the light of Ixalan's treasure tokens, but it's not hard to imagine a block that wants similar color-fixing without the danger of mana rituals. And this is much safer and cheaper to put on cards.

Tuesday, September 5, 2017

CCDD 090517—Skymill

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/5/2017 - Exert and land can be friends. This is the tip of the iceberg.

Monday, September 4, 2017

CCDD 090417—Caustic Tide

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/4/2017 - I'm traveling today, so I've queued up a CCDD. I'll review the WAC tomorrow, hopefully. Happy Labor Day!

Thursday, August 31, 2017

CCDD 083117—Breakwood Falconer

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/31/2017 - Tuesday I questioned whether Deeproot Champion was the best use of that rules text.
Today, I found a green creature in my CCDD folder with a noncreature spell trigger. Is one more justified than the other? Let's talk about that.

Wednesday, August 30, 2017

CCDD 083017—What the Sea Becomes & The Sky Reflects Us

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/27/2017 - It's always bothered me that cards like Clone give you the option not to copy something, as if you'd ever prefer to have a 0/0 with no abilities. Rather than worry about the rules implications of making that action mandatory, what if we try to make the choice relevant?

Tuesday, August 29, 2017

CCDD 082917—Regal Bastion & Radier's Encampment

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/29/2017 - There are numerous ways to restrict when a land can best fix your colors, but one we've seen almost none of is the timing restriction. Today's card pairs a timing restriction with an event that you usually have no control over but can generally expect regardless:

Thursday, August 24, 2017

CCDD 082417—Jund Iguana

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/24/2017 - I wanted to pair firebreathing, the Rootwalla ability, and some black activated ability via stepped costs. This is the result.

Wednesday, August 23, 2017

CCDD 082317—Twinned

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/27/2017 - I was working on a keyword called 'emulate' which would let you play cards from your hand as copies of the spell with emulate. Some iterations were exactly that, others cost more or had a reduced effect. One had a variable effect based on the card's real CMC, so that you could pay more and get more out of your copies (or pay less and get less)

Ultimately all of those executions suffered the same problem. Emulate is too recursive and noninteractive. Games are less interesting when we cast the same spell over and over, and less fun when there's nothing we can do to end such shenanigans.

How can we salvage the core idea—to let you discard useless cards to cast more of the spells you need right now—without promoting boring and frustrating games?

Tuesday, August 22, 2017

CCDD 082217—Wanderwine Hub

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/27/2017 - This is mostly less powerful than the actual Wanderwine Hub, but it's also more sensical. It just seems silly how often you reveal a merfolk card and then immediately cast that same card. And it's not like revealing a merfolk and then doing something else with your mana makes any more sense.

Thursday, August 17, 2017

CCDD 081717—Will Golem

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/17/2017 - The idea with Will Golem is that it's wicked powerful if you've got a ton of mana, but you've got to do every little thing to keep it running.

Wednesday, August 16, 2017

CCDD 081617—Crystal Growth

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/16/2017 - I wanted to make a Rampant Growth that's free once you have enough land, and ended up continuing the basic land theme in order to prevent it from untapped Gaea's Cradle and friends.

Tuesday, August 15, 2017

CCDD 081517—Rigged to Blow

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/15/2017 - Here's an aura that can change the flow of the game in a number of ways.

CCDD 081017—Improviser Mage

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/27/2017 - Choose your own ETB-effect.

Wednesday, August 9, 2017

CCDD 080917—Gaea's Lieutenant

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/9/2017 - I'll bet you can guess which product inspired today's design.

Tuesday, August 8, 2017

CCDD 080817—Primed

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/8/2017 - Primed is a cost reduction mechanic that rewards you for playing a lot of cards of the same color and plays well (possibly too well) with devotion.

It's Friday, Artisans! Art challenge time. Click through to see the illustration and design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning (or whenever I start doing my reviews). CCDD 080217 - Goblin Game 2016 Results, Part 1

Hey Artisans. Every January during Goblin Week I run a twitter design thingy where I toss out a Goblin-Related design prompt and artwork, and you guys make a goblin. I never rendered the results from the last two years, but there are some fun goblins designs there, so I thought I'd pull them up and let you have a look.

Thursday, July 27, 2017

CCDD 072717—Kenra Mystic

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/27/2017 - Kenra Mystic is a red Initiate's Companion. It can't untap creatures, but it untaps the land soon enough to use on combat tricks. You can, of course, still just use that land after combat like Hardened Berserker.

Wednesday, July 26, 2017

CCDD 072617—Distant Minotaur cycle

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/26/2017 - We've got creatures with ETB effects that cycle, and creatures with cycling triggers, but we don't have creatures that give you an effect whether you cast them or cycle them.(The Bant Sojourners cycle is as close as we come.) It should look like evoke, but with card draw.

Tuesday, July 25, 2017

CCDD 072517—War Mup

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/25/2017 - 3/1s for two have become so common (in green and white), they now get significant upsides as well. No color wants a 3/1 for two as much as red, but red isn't so efficient. Here's a new Mogg Flunkies variant.

CCDD 072017—Urza's Candle

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/20/2017 - Green and blue love untapping things. In a vacuum, this card seems like a perfect {GU} common.

Wednesday, July 19, 2017

CCDD 071917—Aggressive Emulation

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/19/2017 - Reverse Akroma's Memorial. Sort of.

Whatever, it plays with green and blue's adaptive nature.

Tuesday, July 18, 2017

CCDD 071817—Brine Viper

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/18/2017 - Its blood is a paralytic agent.

CCDD 071317—Sylvan Freemage

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/27/2017 - Players enjoy suiting up auras but sometimes need a reason to push past their flaws. Designers want to make fun things playable.

Wednesday, July 12, 2017

CCDD 071217—Leper

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/12/2017 - Reuben has been exploring some -1/-1 counter mechanics on his Tumblr blog, Remaking Magic, and this morning I had an idea in that space.

Tuesday, July 11, 2017

CCDD 071117—Caretaker of Blossoms

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/11/2017 - There are at least a half-dozen cards waiting to be designed around prowess-for-keywords.

CCDD 070617—Gangling Refractor

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/6/2017 - Getting to copy your opponent's kill spell seems like a more fun twist on the kind of spell protection Glyph Keeper offers.

Wednesday, July 5, 2017

CCDD 070517—Draw Blood

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/5/2017 - Putting two half-card effects together to reach the value of a full card, using flavor as the glue.

Tuesday, July 4, 2017

CCDD 070417—Wandering Elf

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/4/2017 - I was surprised to realize this simple card has never been made, after seeing Pasteur's design in the last Weekend Art Challenge.
