CCDD 042017—The Place Foretold

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/20/2017 - Here's another kind of land that wants to be enchanted.

Wednesday, April 19, 2017

CCDD 041917—Enchanted Valley

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/19/2017 - If you really wanted to make land auras relevant to a set, you could make a land that wants to be enchanted.

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

CCDD 041817—land auras

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/18/2017 - Relevant to last weekend's design challenge.

Thursday, April 13, 2017

CCDD 041317—devotion

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/13/2017 - How about devotion as a cost-reduction mechanic? It's a lot like affinity for [color] permanents, but we've actually only seen affinity used for artifacts and lands, so it's still novel functionality.

CCDD 041217—Pisonic Intrusion & Nightmare Made Real

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/12/2017 - Here are a couple cards to help support mixing mill and damage as a strategy.

Tuesday, April 11, 2017

CCDD 041117—splitmeld

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/11/2017 - Okay, today's idea is weird. Real weird. Buckle in, kiddos.

Keep Your Friends Close

Hey folks. Please enjoy another post from guest columnist Jake Mosby.
—Jay Treat

Understanding the color pie is a core skill for anyone who wants to design Magic cards. Luckily, there are a lot of resources available to designers that analyze the broad strokes of the color pie. Mark Rosewater has been writing about the color pie for 15 years, and he's written at length about how the colors interact with one another. In all that time, I have yet to see anything more than cliffnotes about how colors come into conflict with their allies. For example, if you want to make a set where green is at odds with white (like Mirrodin Besieged), there isn’t a go-to resource out there to help you identify potential sources of that conflict. This article aims to change that.

CCDD 040617—transfuse

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/6/2017 - Today's mechanic is a blend of repurpose and bloodpact: Rather than discard a card to upgrade a static effect according to the CMC of what you discard, you can pay a variable amount of life.

Wednesday, April 5, 2017

CCDD 040517—Give Me a Hand

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/5/2017 - Seeing the red and blue Amonkhet gods got me wondering how you could turn both on at once. The result is an un-card.

Tuesday, April 4, 2017

CCDD 040417—Repurpose

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/4/2017 - What if you had a spell with a static effect, that you could upgrade to a variable effect at the cost of a card instead of mana? Repurpose is loosely inspired by the Shoal cycle.

CCDD 033017—Tactical Genius

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/30/2017 - Tactical Genius wants you to attack, or for your opponent to attack, or both. It's stats are tuned for survival: its own and that of enemy attackers. Give her enough combat data, and she'll start churning out plans to help you win the war.

Wednesday, March 29, 2017

CCDD 032917—Bloodpact

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/29/2017 - Here's a keyword for suicide black and dead guy red. These colors care more about hurting their enemy than themselves, so they're happy to pay a few life to make their creatures more aggressive.

Designing Duel Decks

Hey folks. I'm pleased to announce a new guest columnist for Goblin Artisans. Please welcome Jake Mosby. This article was originally posted to MTG Salvation.—Jay Treat

Introduction
There are countless formats and ways to play Magic: The Gathering, and there are just as many different ways to participate in amateur/custom Magic design. Some people enjoy designing single cards. Some people enjoy participating in design challenges. Many embark on the journey of creating an entire custom set. But strangely, few custom designers focus their energy on creating one of the best tools to develop design skills: the Duel Deck.

CCDD 032717—Barter in Bone

Cool Card Design of the Day
1/25/2017 - I'm postponing the Weekend Art Challenge Review a day because I'm sick and my brain not work good. Here's something I made when it did.

Friday, March 24, 2017

CCDD 032317—Sorting Hat

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/23/2017 - Top-down Jenny strangeness.

Wednesday, March 22, 2017

CCDD 032217—Sylvan Preserver

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/22/2017 - Here's a green creature that helps you combat countermagic.

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

CCDD 032117—Carrion Screecher & Singing Sister

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/21/2017 - The harpy challenge earlier this month got me thinking about harpy tribal, for some reason. When I think of harpies, I imagine them in a small flock, attracted to dying victims.

Thursday, March 16, 2017

CCDD 031617—Stream Forder

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/16/2017 - I was playing a Limited game online a while back and was struck by the distinct moment when my strategy switched from primarily aggressive to totally controlling. I observed that the benefits of racing as I had been were dropping slowly but that I wasn't far from establishing sufficient board control to reach inevitability.

What if there were a card that helped a player switch from aggro to control?

Wednesday, March 15, 2017

CCDD 031517—Nighthawkmobile

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/15/2017 - Vampire Nighthawk is the new let's-make-callbacks-to-this-broken-card card. Deathgaze Cockatrice, Insatiable Harpy, Aerial Responder, and Gifted Aetherborn are all examples. So here's another, in vehicle form.

Tuesday, March 14, 2017

CCDD 031417—Sizeable Destiny

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/14/2017 - I tried to make a variant of totem armor where you can save a creature by enchanting it when it would die, perhaps for a return to Theros where aura keywords are viable.

CCDD 031017—Virgin Territory

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/10/2017 - As a bonus CCDD, here's a City of Brass for players without access to a lot of dual lands.

Thursday, March 9, 2017

CCDD 030917—Vacant Mansion

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/9/2017 - We don't usually want to reward players for doing nothing (because if the reward is substantial enough, they will, and nothing ain't fun), but helping a player comeback from a position where they can't do anything seems reasonable.

Walk with me.

Wednesday, March 8, 2017

CCDD 030817—Amberfield Castle & Worldscorcher's Tomb

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/8/2017 - Here are two very powerful lands. Are they too powerful to print? (Probably, but let's discuss.)

Tuesday, March 7, 2017

CCDD 030717—City of Aspiration & City of Industry

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/7/2017 - Here's a simple take on a land that levels up after some use. You can use it immediately, and it starts fixing your mana later.

CCDD 030317—Bad Cairns

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/3/2017 - Here's a bonus CCDD I made before MaRo's review of dual lands, but is sure relevant to the filter lands he discussed.

Thursday, March 2, 2017

CCDD 030217—Fast or Colorful Bog/Land & Yoyo Bog

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/2/2017 - Inspired by MaRo's review of dual lands, in particular the ability to choose to use your land immediately or let it enter the battlefield tapped… How about a dual land that ETBT, unless you need the mana immediately (and colorless will do)?

Wednesday, March 1, 2017

CCDD 030117—Cruel Memory

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/1/2017 - This creature costs {B}{B}. If you don't have double-black at the moment, you can pay {2}. The cost is that you have to pay {2} again next turn. We could use echo as an alternate casting method so that it makes cards easier to play, rather than just faster.

Tuesday, February 28, 2017

CCDD 022817—Path to Stone Rain & Path to Counterspell

Cool Card Design of the Day
1/25/2017 - Path to Stone Rain is the spell form of Ghost Quarter. It's a Stone Rain that uses the Path to Exile downside, which turns it from mana denial to utility-land denial, something red is known for.

Thursday, February 23, 2017

CCDD 022317—Eager Vassal

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/23/2017 - At first blush, this will look like a tamed Spellwild Ouphe, but its true purpose is to allow players to splash auras and combat tricks in a deck that would have trouble playing them otherwise.

Wednesday, February 22, 2017

CCDD 022217—Pneumatequine

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/22/2017 - A couple fairly obvious uses for energy in a future set.

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

CCDD 022117—Memory Jarhead

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/21/2017 - Memory Jar on a stick. But not Magus of the Jar.

The motivation for this was to make the second half of the jar an event you have to make happen, instead of it happening immediately. Which has upsides and downsides.

Thursday, February 16, 2017

CCDD 021617—Bark Knight

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/15/2017 - A green Jetting Glasskite.

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

CCDD 021517—Chandra's Fire Reflex

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/15/2017 - There's a solution for making the legendary supertype meaningful in a positive way, it's just years too late to implement: Spells that reference your legend are improved while it's in play. Maybe they all cost a little less to cast, or they all have some kicker, or a wild variation of benefits.

We could today implement a new across-the-board rule that any spell with a legend's name in its own costs {1} less, but Wizards doesn't like to mess with cardnames-matters because of variations due to printing across languages. In theory, proper names should be consistent within a given language, but there are still a number of issues, probably including: Cardnames that share a word or word-part in common with a legend's name but were never intended to be related; cards that were meant to be related but do so by art or flavor text and not by name; cards with no generic mana in the cost.

Anyhow, here's a custom card based on the idea:

Tuesday, February 14, 2017

CCDD 021417—Adventure Trail

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/14/2017 - This first Adventure Trail came from the idea of some terrible dual lands from Magic's dark years, I think. If you really need color, you can get it and this turn, but you'll be down a land next turn.

CCDD 020917—Caught

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/8/2017 - Here's an Oblivion Ring that rewards you for having an army.

Wednesday, February 8, 2017

CCDD 020817—In Custody

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/8/2017 - Here's an Arrest that rewards armies.

Tuesday, February 7, 2017

CCDD 020716—Detain for Questioning

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/7/2017 - Make any of your creatures a Banisher Priest. Almost; I embellished a bit with the minimum-power clause, which is flavorful and limits the card's power level.

Weekend Art Challenge 020317—grumplesoup

Thursday, February 2, 2017

CCDD 020217—Mourning Stag

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/2/2017 - Here's the back half of Elephant Guide: a 3/3 for {G} that requires a creature to die. The trigger is worded so that you're guaranteed to get your stag even if someone kills your target in response.

What else can you do with that tech?

Wednesday, February 1, 2017

CCDD 020117—Cosmic Orrery

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/1/2017 - A couple different angles on "everything costs half as much." Halving is an unfortunately awkward thing to ask your players to do. Stupid odd numbers.

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

CCDD 013117—Die Fighting

Cool Card Design of the Day
1/31/2017 - For some reason, when this title popped into my head, it wanted to be seen in three different colors. Which do you prefer?
