CCDD 072712—Crush the Weak

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/27/2012 - Started on another short fiction CCDD yesterday, but when I "finished," it demanded a major rewrite. Stupid, demanding medium.

To sate your card-lust in the meantime I present the following without editorial. Opinions welcome.

  1. Harsh, but fun. Maybe more fun as an uncommon, because it's cheap instant removal that replaces itself.

Makes me think of a BBB Murder that cantrips if the creature has 0 power.

The most important thing is that now I really want to see a card called "Eat the Rich."

    1. Heh. But would it be black or green?

    2. I was thinking white, like Smite the Monstrous, but setting the restriction to 10+ and getting a land untap/life gain/card draw.

On the other hand, setting Crush the Weak to 10 and maybe switching it to white would be a nice mirror.

  2. I feel like you'd need a rather unusual set for this to have enough targets to be viable at common.

  3. Though not very good card value, combos with things like Chant of the Skifsang for pretty cool effects. Hmm, actually, this card doesn't kill things with less than 0 power. Interesting.

Also, this looks (maybe it's just the art) like possibly one of the few justifiable kill spells in Green. With something that says 'you may only cast Crush the Weak if you control a creature' or something.

Pretty niche indeed but I like the concept.

    1. I believe that a creature with 3 printed power given -13/-0 is treated as having 0 power until it gains 11 or more power.

If a set were going to bleed creature destruction into green (and we're not counting stuff like Prey Upon), then I agree this wouldn't be a terrible option.

    2. From a rules perspective creatures will have negative power, they just don't deal negative damage.

I'm not a huge fan of supplementing Twisted Image with this effect because the swap interacts so much more often in normal magic games. Not that niche cards can't exist, but I think niche answers are best served dealing with something that's normally very hard to stop. Murder doesn't fall into that category, and as such I think this only excites Melvins and those Spikes who pride themselves on predicting the metagame they're going into.
That's not to say I'd never support this card, but I think it would need to exist alongside something like Rise of the Eldrazi's defender theme which flooded the environment with plausible targets.

  4. Destroy target creature with 0 CMC is more like it.

I think destroying 0 power makes this mostly irrelevant, where 0 CMC would be good in the sideboards against tokens/delvers/etc.

Perhaps too powerful at B when you include the cantrip.

    1. You've got something there.
Is it worth it to say "target creature with converted mana cost 0" instead of "target token creature" just to get Ornithopter, Memnite and Dryad Arbor?

    2. I think CMC 0 makes more sense, and makes it (slightly) more playable.

For such a niche card, you may as well include those cards with CMC 0 as well, since there aren't that many.

    3. ... CMC 0 makes it a great answer to any man-land. That should be a large part of that consideration, I think. "Nice Inkmoth Nexus".

    1. Power 1 or less makes it hugely overpowered. Kills dorks, unflipped delvers, and all sorts of cards.

And cantrips? Sign me up for a playset!

    2. If that change were made, it would definitely either lose the cantrip or gain a mana.

  6. For some reason I think it should be called "Sit Upon."
