CCDD 092613—Mangler

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/26/2013 - Mangler was probably inspired by the siren designs from the last Theros weekend art challenge. It should probably be blue-black, although it's 'siren' ability is different enough it could be put on a black rare without upsetting the color pie terribly. In any case, I liked the idea of a horror that draws people in, eats them and then grows to draw in more people.

  1. I agree with U/B. Why does it count CMC and not power?

    1. Sloppiness?
It fits the theme best. It doesn't matter how hard you fight, it draws in creatures below a certain capability. That said, it's really awkward to read and not different enough to justify the anti-poetry. Clearly it should compare power with power.

    2. Another riff:

      Mangler (R)
      3B
      Creature - Horror
Whenever a creature damaged by ~ this turn dies, put a +1/+1 counter on ~.
1U: Target creature with power less than ~'s power attacks this turn if able.
      3/3

  2. A case could be made for R/B (Curse of the Nightly Hunt + Sengir Vampire's ability.)

    1. I agree. "Must attack" effects are primary in red, and flavor-wise this feels very red (assuming we compare power rather than CMC).

  3. Shameless plug: see mondaymorningmaro.blogspot.com/2013/09/armchair-designing-theros-and-dactyla_17.html (third card down) for a mono-blue Siren design that plays in similar areas.

  4. I love it, I think it could possibly be clearer. Instead of making the creatures attack, how about giving it... Lure? (That's what it is after all.) I'd also make it count one thing (power or CMC, and power is more interesting, it lets your opponent pump his guys to get out of the lure)

"Creatures with power less than CARDNAME's power must block it if able.
Whenever a creature dealt damage by CARDNAME this turn dies, put a +1/+1 counter on CARDNAME."

It'd be a cool green/black card. In fact, I think this could be a really cool monogreen hydra.
