Greetings, artisans! Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review, if that happens.
Design a card for Khans of Tarkir.
Be mindful that about half this art will be visible once fit to the card frame.
I'll go for the obvious!
ReplyDeleteMardu Bird Tamer 1RW
Creature -- Human Warrior (U)
Raid -- When ~ enters the battlefield, if you attacked with a creature this turn, put a 1/1 white bird token with flying onto the battlefield.
3/2
Why is this red?
Delete3/2's for 3 are traditionally most frequently in Red. Here I'm mostly using the multicolorness to get a mana discount (both Red and White can do 3 mana 3/2s, so RW can do a 3/2 with significant upside).
DeleteIn mono white it is really hard to cost this card at less than 4, which would make it pretty unexciting.
Tokens associated with multicolor cards are always problematic. I'm totally fine with a RW card making a mono-W Bird, though I could also see making this a 2/2 first strike or something to further justify the red. Actually, come to think of it, that's very close to Attended Knight. At uncommon you could probably afford to do something a little more distinctive and powerful.
DeleteI did originally want this to be a common, but when I looked at it I thought it was a bit too powerful. My intent was that the bird token would be a really solid Raid enabler.
DeleteI focused on the hawk landing on the spear
ReplyDeleteMardu Spearhawk 2W
Flying
As long as you control another creature with first strike, Mardu Spearhawk has first strike.
2/2
Very neat. Seems like a slightly better Wind Drake than White usually gets, though. Common or uncommon?
DeleteI'm not sure I'll have the time to render them this week, but since it can be cropped different ways for different focuses, it's probably worthwhile mentioning if you'd like a particular part of the art focused on in your submission.
ReplyDeleteI'll take care of the renders this week, but like zefferal said, mention an area of focus if you have one in mind.
DeleteMarauding Goatherd 2URG
ReplyDeleteCreature - Human Warrior (R)
Trample
Whenever Marauding Goatherd attacks, each creature you control with power 1 or less has base power 4 until end of turn.
5/3
Watermark: Temur
Crop such that the lead rider's hat, the tip of his spear, the hooves of his horse, and the left edge of the art reach the new edges.
If you're in Temur colors, it's highly unlikely that you are running a lot of cards with power 1 or less.
DeleteBlue has small men, and RG have tokens.
DeleteI think it'd be more appropriate if it were creatures with power 2 that got pumped, considering Morph.
DeleteI like the 2-power idea a lot. "Each creature you control with power 2 or less gets +2/+0 until EOT" maybe.
DeleteSo I wrote a long and detailed post, but blogger ate it. :/
DeleteThe short of what I'm trying to accomplish with this card is:
-Feels blue, red, and green. (The base power-setting was my attempt to justify blue.)
-Plays well with Goat tokens, but not to the exclusion of creatures with power > 0.
-Enables Ferocious without resorting to the same 3-5cmc midrange beater suite that Naya and Garruk's power matters cards did.
-Isn't a chump attacker played solely for the trigger.
I have realized that a creature trying to Ferocious-ify other creatures when it already enables the mechanic is silly, so the base body is getting inverted to a 3/5. Still not sure what to do about the ability.

Enchantment
If you would play a land that doesn't have the same name as any land you control, it doesn't count towards the number of lands you may play each turn.
Think this would be worded "Whenever you play a land, if it doesn't share a name with any other land you control, you may play an additional land this turn."
DeleteThis doesn't feel like it belongs in Tarkir. It's very heavily encouraging five-color play rather than wedges. Not sure how I'd change it to be more wedge-y, though.
I often like higher-cost extra-land-drop cards, as they can allow some kooky-fun things to happen but don't have a threatening effect on the early game. I think this, 2 Karoos, and an Amulet of Vigor gets you unlimited mana in Commander? But that's probably fine.
DeleteGiven that Khans has such an expanded corps of lands (is it three uncommon cycles and one rare?), plus the normal aggregate of basics you might come up with in a ~3color deck, I'm happy enough with this as a fit.
I only know of 1 uncommon + 1 rare cycle so far. There's a good chance they will also have a common cycle like the Panoramas, but beyond that I wouldn't expect too much.
DeleteAlso, this is probably unplayable in Limited.
This + Lotus Cobra + Oboro, Palace in the Clouds is an infinite mana combo that can go off on turn 3, assuming you have a fourth land in hand with a name you haven't played yet. Too good for Modern?
DeleteNot too good that we wouldn't want to try it. "Weird Land Combo" is probably fun at best, and dies to Blood Moon.
DeleteTemur Scouting Party 1RG
ReplyDeleteCreature- Human Scout (Common)
3/3
CARDNAME gets +1/+1 as long as you control a creature with flying.
Top-down design (using the top half of the art, obviously). Very curious to hear people's opinions on the ability. My reasoning is that in a wedge set, it makes sense for an ally-color pair to 'need' an additional color (in this case blue) to provide something that it wouldn't normally have access to.
I like that the ability gets you to 4 power for Ferocious. What I don't like is that wanting you to have a flyer doesn't feel red and *definitely* doesn't feel green.
DeleteAlso, a potential 4/4 for 3 seems too good for common.
Points taken. Changing to 1GU and 3/2 for now.
DeleteI love the idea, but I wish "We're better at scouting" was communicated differently than "gets +1/+1".
DeleteMaybe something like "When ~ ETBs, if you control a creature with flying, you may look at a facedown creature an opponent controls." or something?
I really want it to get to 4 power for Ferocious, as Evan said. Would changing the name to Temur Hunting Party help?
DeleteMaybe? I connect "thing with flying" with "better at scouting" much better than "better at fighting."
DeleteI really love the condition and the name you originally proposed. I'm less excited about it having the ability to permanently turn on your Ferocity. Though, playing "that makes me think of", here is a very invasion-y version:
Temur Enabler 1RG
Creature - Mongolian
~ gets +1/+1 as long as you control a blue creature.
3/2
Since Temur is the only clan that's in red and green, if you're already in red and green I'm not sure you need a bonus for playing blue.
DeleteSometimes it is good to reward players for doing something they do anyway. See landfall!
DeleteFinal submission:
DeleteTemur Hunting Party 1RG
Creature- Human Scout (Common)
3/2
CARDNAME gets +1/+1 as long as you control a creature with flying.
And the partial inspiration for the top-down idea:

Go for the Goat 1B
ReplyDeleteInstant (U)
Destroy target Goat.
Having goats is increasingly a liability on Tarkir.
Lol'd at the flavor text. I would love to see the environment where this is actually a relevant card.
DeleteStrictly better than Go for the Throat in an Artifact and Goat themed set (which I'm sure is coming soon). You need something to kill those Mecha-Goats.
Delete10/10 would play
Delete@lpaulsen: Given Misery Charm and Human Frailty were very bad, that would have to be a pretty unusual environment.

ReplyDeleteMardu Outrider 2R
ReplyDeleteCreature - Human Warrior (UC)
Morph 3W
When Mardu Outrider is turned face-up, put two 1/1 white Bird creature tokens with flying onto the battlefield.
3/2
I heartily approve of the off-color-morph concept. The morph ability on this one seems just a little swingy compared to the front half-- you could easily say "one Bird token" and the morph would still get used plenty.
DeleteOK, new version:
DeleteMardu Outrider 1R
Creature - Human Warrior (UC)
Morph 2W
When Mardu Outrider is turned face-up, put a 1/1 white Bird creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
3/1
More variation between the 3 mana 2/2 and the red half, plus down to one bird but a cheaper unmorph cost.
Get Your Goat URW
ReplyDelete[Cropped to see the lead human and as many goats as possible]
Instant (U)
Creatures attack you this turn if able. Whenever a creature attacks you this turn, put a 0/1 white goat creature token onto the battlefield blocking it.
This doesn't feel particularly Jeskai.
DeleteCrop zoomed on the leaving figure on the right, and no else
ReplyDeleteHorde Outcast RW
Creature - Human Monk (c)
Prowess (Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, this creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)
First strike
Tired of the restlessness and violence of her clan, she fled to find herself and a new home among the Jeskai.
2/1
Strong. I like it.
DeleteAbzan Goatgrave WGB
ReplyDeleteEnchantment (r)
If you control a creature, whenever a creature you control dies, draw a card.
Fixed, one-sided Fecundity? Sure. Strikes me as more Sultai than Abzan, though. And I think the "if" doesn't actually do anything as it's currently worded. I think what you're looking for is something like:
DeleteAs long as you control two or more creatures, whenever one of those creatures dies, draw a card.
... which now makes the W in the cost seem more plausible, since this likes tokens and Wraths so much.
I think that might actually be too strong with tokens and Wraths, but I could be wrong (since you need creatures, this, *and* a Wrath to get cards back). My intent was that a Wrath should net you no cards unless there's a survivor - but the way you have it worded is definitely more compelling from a reading-standpoint. Maybe:
DeleteWhen a creature you control dies, draw a card if you control another creature.
or:
As long as you control a creature, whenever another creature you control dies, draw a card.
Is that worth the hoop? Do either of these read intuitively or work under the rules?
Oh, I see. I read it wrong at first. I think-- but am not by any means sure-- that this will do the trick:
DeleteWhenever a creature you control dies, if you control another creature, draw a card.
As I understand it, the "intervening if" checks both when the ability is triggered and when it resolves, which should handle Wraths properly at least.
Blood-Kin Guardian 2W
ReplyDeleteCreature - Human Soldier (U)
Outlast 3W (3W, T: Put a +1/+1 counter on this creature. Outlast only as a sorcery.)
Whenever you activate CARDNAME’s outlast ability, you may tap another untapped creature you control. If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on that creature.
2/3
focus on the two horseman
It's worth mentioning here that we haven't seen any two-color commons spoiled so far. I'm not sure I expect there to be any.
ReplyDeleteYeah, with Maro's comment yesterday about the as-fan of gold being about half what it was in RTR, I think you're right.
DeleteMardu Supply Line 3{W}
ReplyDeleteCreature Human Warior
Raid - If you attacked this turn, put a 0/1 white goat on the battlefield for each creature that attacked this turn.
{B}{R}, sacrifice a goat, {t}: regenerate target attacking creature.
