CCDD 111214—Raise the Unknown & Indiscriminate Necromancy

Cool Card Design of the Day
11/12/2014 - It occurred to me that a 2/2 colorless creature is an awful lot like a zombie (particularly a Null from Innistrad or Returned from Theros).

On its own, Raise the Unknown is a slightly weaker Vile Rebirth, but in a set with morph, it's a cheap Zombify.

  1. I love it.

My biggest negative with Indiscriminant Necromancy is that, when you put the creatures into play, you will have to reveal them (since otherwise there is an annoying dance where you write down every card in yoru opponent's graveyard and then look at the list of what remains and figure out what is missing), and I feel explicitly revealing a morph and then putting it face down goes a bit against the mechanic.

Could it have "Shuffle the rest of the creature cards from your graveyard into your library" or something so that there is mystery?

    1. It could have that. Well worth considering.

    2. I agree with the sentiment, but that seems really fiddly. How about bumping it up to rare and getting everything out of your yard?

    3. A zombie for every creature card in your graveyard? That sounds totally broken. I think WOTC has learned its lesson on this. Look at Empty the Pits.

  2. A new player is going to assume that the purpose of this is to shuffle your dead morph in with your other morphs.

  3. Riffing off of Signal the Clans:

    Rally the Clan RG
    Sorcery (R)
Search your library for three creature cards and reveal them. If you reveal three cards with different names, choose one of them at random and put that card onto the battlefield face down. Shuffle the rest into your library.

    1. Very clever that you don't have to reveal which one you put onto the battlefield. "My guy is one of these three morphs"... I like it!

    2. I want this card to be printed tomorrow. It's a fun-but-fair way to cheat out fatties in Modern+. Imagine rallying for Griselbrand + Emrakul + (Iona/Elesh), and then casting Flickerwisp/Restoration Angel/Cloudshift. There's already synergy there for red-Akroma, so it could be a pretty fun deck.

  4. Raise the Unknown is so perfect. Though... I can't help wondering whether it would be broken at 1 mana.

    1. Right?
Without morph, it's still worse than Vile Rebirth because it only looks at your own graveyard, but with morph, dang. At rare definitely could be 1cc. Maybe even at uncommon? Maybe if it chose randomly?

    2. Keep in mind it is much better than Vile Rebirth vs bounce.

(I think the interaction of bounce and tokens is my biggest complaint about Magic overall.)

  5. Hey, I already made Raise The Unknown! (URL: http://imakethecard.tumblr.com/post/97760397433)

    I guess it's a pretty obvious idea.

Anyway, obviously I like it. And Indiscriminate Necromancy is cool too, both flavourfully and mechanically.

  6. Exile any number of creature cards from your graveyard face down. Then out one onto the battlefield face down.

    1. Cool. I'd also consider swapping 'any' for 'all' though that's a very different card.
