CCDD 041315—Caught in the Current

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/13/2015 - What if Crippling Chill could only target a creature that's already attacking?

Usually, 'remove from combat' is white, and this could easily be white-blue in a gold or hybrid set, but this is a kind of bleed I'm often okay with: Using a phrase that's usually associated with another color to implement a subset of an ability our color gets commonly.

Defensively, Caught in the Current is generally better than Crippling Chill since it costs less and you can let your opponent commit to their attack before letting them know one of their beasties is going home. It can't prevent attack triggers and is less effective against vigilant creatures, though, but the big downside is that it's potentially useless when you're on the offensive.

  1. another upside: It can render a combat trick useless

    1. Good point.
Entirely possible testing could show this needs to lose the cantrip and cost {U}. Or keep it and cost {2}{U}. Or just be uncommon.

      Could this be green?

      Mini-bind 1G
      Instant
Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to and dealt by target attacking creature this turn.. That creature does not untap during its controller's next untap step.

      Draw a card.

    2. Telekinesis! Wow, I totally forgot about that card. I'd use that as precedence and power-comparison, but never-reprinted cards that old aren't great for either.

There absolutely was a time where no one would have blinked an eye at Mini-bind in green. The last it's gotten "doesn't untap" was M10 and the symmetry of the damage prevention is more blue. I wouldn't say it's right out, but it's certainly a stretch nowadays.

  3. Or that creature gets -X/-0; where X is it's power

    1. the problem is that encourages just gang blocking and killing the creature

    2. And gets trumped by other tricks. I don't want a trick this narrow getting trumped.
