Greetings, artisans! Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review, if someone volunteers to render the cards.
Design a card for this art that includes the words "deals damage to." If your card is red, try to find a new angle on burn. If your card isn't, be sure to justify that fact.
Flamebow Sureshot RR
ReplyDeleteCreature - Human Archer (R)
Whenever Flamebow Sureshot deals damage to a player, that player gets a blaze counter.
At the beginning of your upkeep, Flamebow Sureshot deals damage to each opponent equal to the number of blaze counters that player has.
2/2
The wording might need some tweaking, but the idea is once you've been singled out by this guy, he's not letting up. The damage dealt intentionally piles on the blaze counters, getting hotter and hotter each round.
Feedback appreciated as always.
Setting opponents on fire? Count me in!
DeleteI only wish the opponent kept burning after the archer died, a la Obsidian Fireheart. But I can see how that would be overpowered.
Intentional that multiple Flameshot Archers stack, even if one or more of them didn't do any of the triggering damage?
DeleteUnsure how much this qualifies as "burn", but:
ReplyDeleteSight-Arrow Raider 2R
Creature - Human Warrior (R)
Sacrifice Sight-Arrow Raider: If a source would deal damage to target creature or player this turn, instead it deals X times that damage, where X is Sight-Arrow Raider’s power.
2/2
Archer is a creature type!
DeleteTrue. Changed to Archer.
DeleteEverflame Bow {2}{R}{R}
ReplyDeleteLegendary Artifact - Equipment (M)
Equipped creature gets +4/+0 and has “Whenever this creature attacks, you may have it deal X damage divided as you choose among any number of creatures or players, where X is its power.”
Equip 4
I know this has a higher cost than it looks, and 4+4+mythic can earn a lot of power level, but I'm a little concerned that this is nearly impossible to fight against starting turn 5. If that's fine, though, this is fine.
DeleteAs a mythic, I'd be excited/it'd be a pretty cool card if it played into the set's story. It really packs quite a wallop.
Sabotage Weaponry RW
ReplyDeleteInstant (r)
Whenever a creature target player controls would deal damage this turn, prevent that damage, then that creature deals 1 damage to each other creature that player controls.
Fight firepower with fire.
I'll do the renders this week.
This is a very cool top down design and I like the flavor text. It reminds me of a Deflecting Palm that punishes a player for going wide rather than going tall. Rare is right too, because against an unsuspecting opponent, this could easily be a one-sided board wipe.
DeleteBurning Arrow 1W/R
ReplyDeleteInstant (Common)
Burning Arrow deals 2 damage divided as you choose among one or two target attacking or blocking creatures.
(Red/White Hybrid)
Totally fair, and at common to boot. Does the arrow hit one and then the flame spread to the other?
DeleteHere's something for Dragons of Tarkir to help support the BR Dragon theme in Constructed. (As opposed to the Dash mechanic, which in retrospect BR seemed entirely focused on.)
ReplyDeleteKolaghan Rearguard (Uncommon)
BR
Creature - Human Archer
3/2
Whenever a Dragon you control deals damage to an opponent, Kolaghan Rearguard deals that much damage to target creature that player controls.
They are thunder following lightning.
I'd call this card an A+, for me. Not sure if it needs to be a Warrior, or not-a-warrior.
DeleteIf you are submitting a creature to this week's challenge, it really ought to be an Archer unless there's a very, very good reason not to. The bow is the focus of the artwork.
DeleteThere are Soldier Archers; without checking, I imagine there are non-Lizard Warrior Archers as well. The question is more "within the context of XTK block, warriors have a specific mechanical value, whether this is one or not probably wants to be intentional rather than incidental".
DeleteCreating Dragon and Warrior cross tribal synergy is an interesting idea and costs so little. I'll add it.
DeleteKolaghan Rearguard (Uncommon)
BR
Creature - Human Warrior Archer
3/2
Whenever a Dragon you control deals damage to an opponent, CARDNAME deals that much damage to target creature that player controls.
They are thunder following lightning.
Al-Nar, Quickshot (rare)
ReplyDeleteRR
Legendary Creature - Human Archer
Haste
T: CARDNAME deals 1 damage to target creature or player. Until end of turn, other Archers you control gain “T: This creature deals 1 damage to target creature or player damaged by CARDNAME this turn.”
2/2
I really like the design. The one thing I don't like is that Archers are primarily green according to a quick Gatherer search, which makes this pretty nothing in Commander. In other formats this is all sorts of cool (presumably limited has other archers etc.) but as a big Commander player, I'm somewhat disappointed I can't make a sweet Mono-R Archer deck.
DeleteGotta agree Ben. Prodigal Arrowmancer needs to happen...
DeleteNot every lord needs to be a Commander build-around lord.
DeleteFlameshot Strike 3RR
ReplyDeleteInstant (C)
Target creature you control gets +3/+0 until end of turn and deals 3 damage to another target creature.
Which thing is dealing the damage, the creature or Flameshot Strike?
Deletethe creature.
DeleteFlameshot Strike 3RR
Instant (C)
Target creature you control gets +3/+0 until end of turn, that creature deals 3 damage to another target creature.
Purposeful Aim {W}{R}
ReplyDeleteInstant - Uncommon
Target creture gains "whenever this creature would be dealt damage this turn by a source you do not control it deals damage equal to its power to target creature or player".
Even as he was consummed by the flames he took aim
"Whenever this creature would be dealt" makes it seem like this is supposed to be a replacement effect. Are you proposing the creature still takes the damage. Also, it needs "until end of turn" somewhere in the clause granting the creature the effect, even though it has "this turn" in the effect itself. There are lots of effects that use "this turn" to explain timing that are not temporary (like Blood-Chin Rager). I like this card a lot. It reminds me of Last strike.
DeleteFlamestrider’s Mark 2R
ReplyDeleteEnchantment - Aura (U)
Enchant creature
When Flamestrider’s Mark enters the battlefield or enchanted creature attacks, it deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
Evoke R (You may cast this spell for its evoke cost. If you do, it’s sacrificed when it enters the battlefield.)
Cool idea! If you remade the mechanic specifically for auras, you could probably let it be cast without a target.
DeleteAuravoke R (You may cast this spell with no targets for its auravoke cost. If you do, it loses enchant creature and is sacrificed when it enters the battlefield.)
I like that. Certainly a bit more exciting, at any rate.
DeleteFlamestrider’s Mark 2R
Enchantment - Aura (U)
Enchant creature
When Flamestrider’s Mark enters the battlefield or enchanted creature attacks, it deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
Auravoke R (You may cast this spell with no targets for its auravoke cost. If you do, it loses enchant creature and is sacrificed when it enters the battlefield.)
Burning Volley 1W
ReplyDeleteInstant
Burning Volley deals 3 damage to target attacking or blocking creature. If you spent R to cast Burning Volley, Burning Volley deals 3 damage to that creature's controller.
Well then...I guess I'll be changing my first submission...
DeleteNice card, btw
Imbue with Fire 1R
ReplyDeleteInstant (Uncommon)
The next time a source you control would deal damage to target player, it deals double that much damage instead.
I really like this.
DeleteFlamebow Master
ReplyDelete1R
Creature - human archer
2/1
Wherever a creature you control deals non-combat damage, it deals twice that much damage instead.
Ready, Aim, FIRE! 2W
ReplyDeleteInstant. (Uncommon)
CARDNAME deals 3 damage to target attacking or blocking creature.
Guildpact- If R was spent to cast CARDNAME, it can't be countered and it's damage can't be prevented.
Well, since I overlooked an almost identical design above...
Delete-Take 2-
Shivan Sniper. 2R
Creature- Human Archer (Unc)
T: CARDNAME deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
2/1
While not definitively coming from "a new angle", this card rebrands the flavor behind red Tims from wizard to archer.
DeleteAlso, the stat buff offers a little more tension without (I hope) too much of a power increase. It is never correct to attack with a pyromancer. Whether or not it's a trap, its at least debatable with this guy.
The main problem I see with this guy is that it becomes even less often correct to attack into him, because of having effectively 3 power on the block.
DeleteIs that a deal breaker for a 3 drop uncommon?
DeleteAssassin's Wrath 3B
ReplyDeleteSocery (Uncommon)
CARDNAME deals 4 damage to target creature with 4 or less toughness or target player with 4 or less life.
Red sometimes uses burn to finish off a damaged creature. This card removes that option. I figured that if Black could cast Strangling Soot, it could cast the first half of this card. I added the second half because it just felt black. But maybe this ought to cost 2BR.
Fire To Arrows-W
ReplyDeleteInstant-Rare
The next time a red source deals damage to you, prevent all but one of that damage.
Arrows? You couldn't think of something better!?
This is strictly worse than Luminesce (an uncommon.)
