CCDD 060617—Bomb Squad

Cool Card Design of the Day
6/6/2017 - This design was top-down from the art, but I'm pleased to discuss the possibility of making non-dragon, non-phoenix flying creatures in red. I argue that as long as they're rare (or else infrequent and weak) and flavorful, they're fine.


I originally made a 4/4 because the art shows four bomb entities, but that had to either cost six or only deal 1 damage each, which just makes the card less fun and relevant. See Spitemare.

    Create four 2/1 red comet creature tokens with flying and haste. Exile those tokens at end of turn.

      At the beginning of combat on your turn, put a comet counter on ~. You may sacrifice ~. If you do, create a 2/1 red Elemental creature token with flying and haste for each comet counter on ~. Exile those tokens after combat.

  2. A little confusion - If I deal 10 damage to this creature when it has 3 +1/+1 counters on it, does it deal something 6, or 20?

      You're right the template is ambiguous.

  3. Riffing on the overall concept:

    Living Bomblet XRR
    Creature - Elemental (M)
    Flying
    CARDNAME ETB with X +1/+1 counters on it.
    If damage would be dealt to CARDNAME, remove that many +1/+1 counters from it instead. Whenever you remove a +1/+1 counter this way, CARDNAME deals 2 damage to target creature or player.

      Can/Should red get a Flying X/X for XRR?

      What if the bombs have to be defused?

      Create X 1/1 red Elemental creature tokens with haste and flying. At EOT, exile them. Each token you exile this way that dealt combat damage to a player deals 2 damage to that player or target creature they control.

    Create two red 2/3 Bomb creature tokens with "At the beginning of each upkeep, if this creature was dealt damage the previous turn, sacrifice it and it deals 2 damage to each creature and player."

    A little too-top-down, but I could see it being just fun enough.
