CCDD 110817—Interfere

Cool Card Design of the Day
11/8/2017 - This counterspell mostly just burns up the mana your opponent used, like Remand but there is one added wrinkle.

Forcing them to re-cast their spell ASAP can mess with their plans. What if they intended to follow up the removal you countered with a creature, and that was the more important spell to them? What if you interfere with their Damnation, and they have to cast it before combat on their next turn? This could ruin an x-spell if they left one or two mana up.

Not saying this is amazing, especially not compared to Remand, but I can imagine it seeing play.

  1. Oh wow, this is interesting in a counter war too. Countering their counterspell can set you up where if you have board advantage, they’ll need to counter their own spell, or perhaps tap out of blue mana before casting a spell.

    Weird but cool.

    1. If ASAP-casting doesn’t work within the rules, could also try:

Counter target spell and exile it. It’s owner can cast it from exile. It’s owner can’t cast other spells as long as it remains in exile.

    2. Brutal. There are times where that card is just a bad remand and other times where it completely locks an opponent out of the game.

    3. "As long as it remains in exile, its owner can't cast other spells until the beginning of your next turn." Or end of turn, the beginning of their next turn, etc. Maybe until the beginning of *the* next turn?

Name a spell, then return all spells with that name to their owners' hands. Players can only cast spells named this way until end of turn.

    4. Getting their Counterspell with my version does seem brutal. Getting their Counterspell or ritual'd Eldrazi seems game winning with R Stech's. Pasteur's temporary lock seems saner than both?

    5. Maybe, they can cast it while exiled but when they cast another spell or attack, they put it into their graveyard?

  2. "Must do so as soon as possible" would require Word of Command-like templating, I think. Unless you make it say something like "can't cast other spells as long as X is exiled", which sounds super dangerous.

    1. Oh, I see R Stech had the same idea.

That version's certainly brutal when it counters a counterspell. I wonder what happens in the mirror match...

  3. I would just go for "That play may cast that card from exile until the end of their next turn."

    1. Indeed!
Fascinating how many different solutions there were, and how they're all slightly functionally different, but get to the same basic effect.
