CCDD 020614—Blind Summons

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/6/2014 - This was my original design for last weekend's art, but it didn't seem particularly lenticular so I saved it.

It's a little odd that Blind Summons only hits creatures; that's an artifact from when it was {1}{RG} and offered a discount of {R}{G}. Between the one-time acceleration and the "play this card now or never effect", this feels too red to share with another color. I would remove the creature restriction, except the art demands it. Plus, this way it's not as stupid with Storm.

  1. While the gameplay and text are cleaner this way I'd rather just add mana to your mana pool with Geosurge text to avoid the inevitable confusion this one will cause for a creature that costs, say, {2}{R}.

    1. Agreed. Thanks to cards like Ragemonger making players think all cost reduction works that way.

"Add {R}{R}{R} to your mana pool and reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a nonland card. Spend this mana only to cast that card."

  2. I expect this card is way worse than it even appears at first. You save 1 mana off the cost of a random spell in your deck, and the likelihood of a miss (hitting a card that costs less than {R}{R}{R} or a card you can't cast with the remaining mana on your board) is pretty high.

    1. Ah, but you're not just up a mana when you hit, you've also replaced the card you used to cast it.
And you can build your deck to make it hit all the time.

    2. If you hit, you are spending 1 card and getting 1 creature. No card advantage this way; it's the same as casting a creature from your hand. If you miss, you wasted a card.

    3. Compare to Pyretic Ritual: +1 card.
