CCDD 123014—Flailing Baspekt

Cool Card Design of the Day
12/30/2014 - When I found this design in my drafts folder, the ability was keyworded ('flailing'). I can see a handful of cards with this ability over as many years, but it's clearly not worth its own vocabulary.

I imagine it be to primary in green and secondary in black, maybe white. Thematically it could be red, but there just aren't many red creatures that would actually benefit from it.

It's sort of a new new rampage.

  1. Slightly worse deathtouch, I like it (but agree, not as a keyword). Would be fun to put on something with Lifelink or some other ability that made it really matter.

This basically turns Magic combat into Hearthstone combat.

    1. Where, for example, a 4/5 trades for two 4/4s.

This is actually the thing that most annoys me about one on one combat systems, when compared with Magic's. It makes minor stat differences huge (and I think this is why Hearthstone has so many hero powers that incidentally do one damage). On the other hand the gain in rules simplicity/transparency is HUGE.

    2. Ablative damage does weird things to a combat system (relative to Magic's, which I admit is actually the outlier).

  2. I would agree that this feels like it could go on a Green common or White rare (potentially alongside "blocks an/any additional creatures"?).

  3. The problem is, that the relevence of this ability barely comes up. It feels like disingspace in a set wasted. Unless it can always block an aditional creatures, in that case it will come up more often.

    1. Text that only occasionally matters, trinket text as it is usually called, is perfectly allowed.

Also, I think this will be a bit more relevant than you're giving it credit for. I don't know how your Siege Mastadons die, but mine usually die being double or triple blocked.

  4. I like that it's not always worse than deathtouch. When given the ability to block lots of creatures, or a Nemesis Mask attacking a token player, it can kill many more than 3 combatants.

So yep, nice ability. Will try to remember this one with a view to stealing it sometime :)
