CCDD 080515—Master

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/5/2015 - What if there were a set of spells that you learned from, that let you experiment with different combinations of spell effects, like a scientist?

Master is splice-onto-instants/sorceries from graveyard instead of hand (minus the meaningless text grafting). A modular form of improve. Each of these cards in your gy becomes an optional kicker effect for new spells you cast.

It's fairly likely that being able to cast these spells repeatedly makes the mechanic impossible to develop and that we'll have to exile them the first time they're mastered. The gameplay value of this version is too high to jump directly to that conclusion, though.

  1. Oh. I just realized my template is seriously wrong.
It should say "you may cast ~ from your gy for its master cost."

    1. I played with almost this mechanic in Crystal Clash for a long time trying to make it work. I really like the idea of it, and there were some really cool cards with it, but ultimately it got killed off for not really leading to interesting play or decisions.

PS: Also learned from CC, the template on the first card probably needs a few more words to handle the case where you shuffle your deck.

  2. I suggested something like this a bit ago, except in my version the spells added their text to the instant/sorcery being cast.

I do like this, though I feel like they need to eat themselves to prevent abuse. Maybe they should just have a much higher cost? The buyback problem almost happens here, but needing to have spells to cast to trigger it might be enough to not have games play out identically all the time.

    1. That's quite likely. I'd want to test it, though.

  3. Where are you using this that Flashback or Spell Mastery isn't just a better fit?

  4. Huh. I don't get Wobbles's or Lee's comments. The whole point of this ability is to let you get it multiple times, specifically more than the twice that flashback allows. Flashback or "eating themselves" would defeat the whole endeavour.

I strongly suspect the costs would need to be significantly higher than Jay has them at the moment. This is more comparable to Retrace, and look at the numbers on Flame Jab, Cenn's Enlistment and Oona's Grace.
