Weekend Art Challenge 110615—PollyUranus

Weekend Art Challenge
Greetings, artisans! Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every  submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review, if someone volunteers to render the cards.

Design a monocolored card for this art, whose name falls alphabetically between Lammasu's Portent and Killing Floor.

  1. I have a hard time imagining Lammasu's Portent and Killing Floor are the same color.

    1. it bothers that K comes before L and Jay's description is reversed.

    2. Hahahaha. I'm dumb.
(But ignoring the color sort was intentional.)

  2. Clearly, Lammasus are black or maybe red in this world. From the looks of the art, angels are too.

    Kotadi Dreamwrencher 3BB
    Creature - Nightmare Angel (R)
    Flying
If another nontoken creature you control would become untapped, you may sacrifice it instead. If you do, put an X/X black Nightmare creature token onto the battlefield, where X is the sacrificed creature's power plus its toughness.
    3/3

    1. Wonderfully bizarre. I'm not convinced the ability is black. Everything but the growth works, but that last bit seems a lot more green than black.

    2. Maybe so. Then again, I didn't hear any color pie complaints about Necropolis Regent.

    3. It is a weird design for a weird art, but I like that. It feels enough black to me.

  3. Leading astray 1R
    Instant uncommon
    Choose one
    * Target creature must attack or block this turn if able

    1. Falls out of the alphabetical requirement (Killing Floor -> Lamasu's Portent -> Leading Astray).
I'm also skeptical that red is on the table for this particular art.
Disregarding that, it's a good design. I could see it at common. At uncommon I could see it being a Choose one or both modal spell.

    Sorcery (U)
Each player exiles a creature he or she controls, then puts an X/X artifact creature token onto the battlefield, where X is the power of the creature that player exiled.

  5. This particular set of restrictions make me want to do a joke submission:
    Pre-8th frame
    Knot of the Fallen 2BB
    Enchantment (C)
Tap a black Angel you control: Put a creature card from your graveyard into play. That creature is a 3/3 elephant. Use this ability only when you cast this card. If either card would be destroyed or buried, bury the other. Remove this card from the game before you start if you are not playing for ante.

    1. I like how this does exactly what the art suggests.

    2. I have only one objection to the design :P
The card doesn't interacting with ante, so the last sentence has no reason to be there.
Other than that, thumbs up. A cool flavorful design, it seems taken straight up from Alpha or something.

    3. There's a nonjoke design in there somewhere, but every time I try to tease it out I end up doing rules and templating contortions.

  6. Laid to Rest {3}{B}
    Sorcery
    Destroy target creature.
At the beginning of your next upkeep, exile all cards from its controller's graveyard.

  7. Kill the Will {2}{B}{B}
    Enchantment (Uncommon or Rare)
    You control enchanted creature
At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice a creature.

For the record, to me this art totally depicts New Phyrexia's conquest of Kaladesh.

  8. So I like challenges that replicate what could be a real challenge/hole if one worked at Wizards. So I like having to fill the gap between K and L. But... we'd know the colour. Killing Floor sounds black or red. Lammasu's Portent sounds more black than red, as it could be a dire omen.

    Sooo...

  12. I've been a little preoccupied with mid terms the last couple of weeks, so my creative juices are a little spent. But I will do the renders this week.

    1. Here are the renders: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1xjghkfeptsomb2/110615%E2%80%94PollyUranus.mse-set?dl=0
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After rendering everyone's cards, I tried to come up with a slightly different view. I thought about making an artifact equipment that was a chain (khain) but was a little to narrow. I just wanted to try out a new mechanic that I've been thinking about doing( if I ever get around to making a set!)

      Laazuruses Angel-1B
      Creature-Zombie Angel-Rare
      Flying
Enslave 2 (When this creature enters the battlefield, target creature an opponent controls gets -2/-2 until this creature leaves the battlefield.)
      2/1
Laazurus “improved” a few angels for the empires nefarious purposes.

    1. Oh whoops, I fell for Jay's trick of writing the two names out of order. We'll change the name to Kukusho's Leash.

    2. Err, Kokusho's Leash. (Yes he used to be Black, but dying was a life altering experience for him and now he is Blue, it is the subject of an upcoming autobiography.)
