Weekend Art Challenge 020516

Weekend Art Challenge
Hello Artisans, Anastase here, bringing you another guest WAC. This week we will try an old/odd format:

You will have to design a card that "wins" if pitted against the previous card an artisan suggested.
Each answer to a card will be using the next image in the queue, in order to generate a cycle of cards that each answers the previous one: the orc wins against the human, the elf wins against the orc, the human wins against the elf, the orc wins against the human.

(Jay: I suggest making an "I'm next" comment immediately to claim your place in the chain if you want to avoid being scooped. Just don't be a jerk and wait an hour after doing so. Post your core idea asap so the next person can start, and then iterate from there.)

Restrictions:
  • The cards have to be creatures.
  • The order of the images has to be respected (orc, elf, human)
  • The new card has to be of a different rarity than the previous card.
  • You cannot reply to a design you submitted save for updating that submission due to feedback. You cannot modify it to the point where the answer submitted after you has to change, however!
  • You can use each image only once (so maximum three cards designed by each person).
  • In case of simultaneous submissions, the one that is higher up in the comments section is the valid one.
Orc by AlexShatohin

Elf by CG-warrior

Human by Entreri

There are bonus points if your card answers multiple cards submitted!
Good crafting to you all!

    1. Spiteheart Battler {1}{R}
      Creature-Orc Berserker (unc)
Whenever a creature deals damage to CARDNAME, CARDNAME deals its power in damage to that creature.
      2/1

      Delete
    2. Simplifying:

Whenever a creature deals damage to CARDNAME, CARDNAME deals 2 damage to that creature.

      Delete
    3. Whenever a creature deals combat damage to CARDNAME, CARDNAME deals 2 damage to that creature.

      Delete
    4. Interesting... the ability is a bit like Bushido 2, except that it doesn't help the Battler survive combat.

I guess a better comparison would be that the final version is strictly worse than Hand of Silumgar, unless it's getting blocked by a first-striker. Yet it somehow reads very appealingly.

    1. Wait, misread Spiteheart Battler. Make that a 1/4 instead.

      Delete
    2. 1/3 works.
In the first strike step, Twinblade deals 1 damage to Battler. Battler's ability triggers. He dies. His trigger deals 2 damage to Twinblade. No regular combat damage is dealt.

    3. Less ideal is how much better this is than Boros Swiftblade.

      Delete
    4. You could add 1 or 2 to the mana cost and still be a printable common.

      Delete
    5. Boros Swiftblade was better then; equipment started getting worse right about then (because it was ridiculously strong) and hasn't gone back up.

    Flash, vigilance
Whenever ~ blocks or becomes blocked, put a +1/+1 counter on it at the end of combat.

    1. My understanding of the challenge is that you have to make a human. Not sure that affects your design.

I'd love to playtest this and see if the counter reward is enough to get players to attack instead of fight. Oh wait, with vigilance, I can attack and block and fight every round. Um.

    2. I'm a little confused about that - I was going in picture order - yours was the middle one of the orc standing alone, czynski's (I thought) was the bottom of the human fighting the elf. It appears the order is the other direction (going up starting from pic #2.) Revision incoming.

    4. The art order was confusing. Adjusted.

    5. re: original design - I was on the fence about the vigilance. It probably is a better card without it.

    2. Biggest critique - I'm not sure that either effect is red. Destroy all legendaries is black or white. Player's can't cast legendaries is untreaded ground. Flavor tells me that it's logically any color other than red, but I would entertain flavor arguments in red if you have them.

      Delete
    3. Oops. Knew I forgot something. Yes it's a rare.

After I posted, I realized it was more of a black card. Or red black. Loner is kind of the wrong word, as it implies that he wants to be alone. It's more like he wants to destroy all those he deems worthy.

      Delete
    4. "Destroy target legendary creature" still trumps Eryll…

      Delete
    5. We're thinking on the same wavelength.

      New text:
      Haste
Tap: CARDBAME fights target legendary creature.

Everything else remains the same, except for maybe the mana cost. Might move it down one.

      Delete
    6. Much redder.

Now, why does he hate other legends so much?

      Delete
    7. Anarchist rebel? Other rebels in the set being nobles?

      Delete
    8. It's an orc. Does it need anymore explanation on why it fights?

But mostly he wants a challenge, so he tries to fight those that are worthy.

    9. I like that answer. Can you express that in the name/flavor?

    1. consider

Orcbane (Damage ~ deals to Orcs is treated as though it has deathtouch. If an Orc would deal damage to ~, prevent that damage.)

      or

Orcbane 1 (If ~ would deal damage to an Orc, it instead deals that much damage plus 1. If an Orc would deal damage to ~, prevent 1 of that damage.)

      Delete
    2. Good point. I considered complete prevention but it seemed like too much. And it would be nice to find a symmetric use for the "1". Not sure about "plus 1", that doesn't really answer the previous card :( Maybe, "you may have 1 of the damage dealt to a an orc be dealt as though it has deatchtouch"??

      Delete
    3. Gross. Just adjust your numbers a little.

      Delete
    4. It is quite rare that a named card is not legendary.

      Delete
    5. Jay: If I had to print it today, I would just settle for removing the number because that's more printable. But I'm not sure that's the end of the story, because cards which prevent damage entirely can be really swingy, that's one reason why wizards are using less protection. I think it's more fun if the card is *hard* to deal with in an orc deck, but not *that* much harder.

Or I'm not sure, is that too finicky, is this about right for a hoser card?

That's why I wanted to explore possibilities other than "complete prevention". I don't want to say "my first idea didn't work so I should give up entirely" But I agree, if I can't think of any, I'd have to settle for complete prevention.

      Anastase: Named card?

      Delete
    6. I'd missed somehow that Azig was 7/5. I'd been leaning toward Orcbane N, but you'd need Orcbane 5 to survive that.

As long as the keyword only targets one particular race—especially a minor one—it shouldn't be too dangerous. Of course, then it's also less relevant.

      Delete
    7. Ah, right! Yeah, I'd be happy if my 1G traded or bounced with his/her 4RR, I don't insist it kills it and survives, but it had better kill it OR survive...

I agree, "+1 damage, prevent first damage" would be an good bane ability, one I'd like to use in future, just it doesn't beat Azig.

Hm. Maybe remove the number, but make it "deathtouch + prevent all BUT 1 of the damage"??

And yeah, I was treating it as if Orcs were a more major part of the set than they usually are (I was really surprised to realise they had their own creature type, and weren't goblins); there's no reason to have a hoser for a minor usually unplayable tribe at all.

      Delete
    8. My strongest opinion on this is that either both halves of Orcbane should have numbers, or neither.

"All but 1 damage" is functionally identical to "all damage" in a world without geistflames.

      Delete
    9. @Jack, sorry, that remark was totally wrong. I read the name as "Against Azig, The Loner" while half asleep. Please disregard! I like deathtoutch + prevent all but 1. It feels like a D&D ranger's ability.

      Delete
    10. Anastase: Oh, of course! I did worry that might be ambiguous but I thought it was better to make it clear which card I was responding to. No worries.

Jay: Yeah, I agree, I went with half and half for the reasons I said, but I agree, it should be both or neither, and I can't think of a very good way of having both.

What do you mean about preventing all but one damage being equivalent to preventing all? It seems like, if you prevent all damage, then orcs can never kill this, but if you prevent all but one, then this can be killed in a double-block (or a quintuple-block if it's hit by giant growth...)?

      Delete
    11. I feel like you could add any creature type to Bane. Then, you could have stuff like Elfbane and Merfolkbane.

I don't think that a certain, very specific creature type being unable to kill this creature isn't possible. I mean, we do have things like Dragon Hunter after all.

I realize it doesn't kill the Swordsman on defense, but it stalls pretty well.

    1. Not sure whether this is a better design, but it's better at killing Arrogant Swordsman:

      Poison-Curse Orc 1BB
      Creature- Orc Warrior (Uncommon)
      2/2
If a creature with 4 or more power would deal damage to CARDNAME, prevent that damage.
If CARDNAME would deal damage to a creature with 4 or more toughness, destroy that creature.

      Delete
    2. I've decided that my first attempt was better, so go ahead and design the next Elf to kill that (though, bonus points if it kills Poison-Curse too).

      Delete
    3. What does the "all but one" gain us?

      Delete
    4. Balance. I thought it would be weird and feel-bad if a bunch of 3/3 creatures could literally do nothing against this guy.

      Delete
    5. So everything deals 1 damage to this, except a 2 damage source?

      Delete
    6. Yeah, it made more sense in my head. Still, there's something to be said for "you can only kill this in 1 hit if you deal exactly lethal damage".
