CCDD 062817—Voodoo Bonfire

Cool Card Design of the Day
6/28/2017 - Here's a cheaper, more damaging Lava Axe, thanks to a delayed effect, and the chance for your opponent to prevent some of the damage.

The result is that your opponent has to decide how much mana to leave untapped to counter damage. The card becomes meaner if you include "you may" in the choice to sacrifice it or not, because you can defer whenever your opponent leaves mana open, potentially consuming quite a bit of their mana over several turns. …I'd want to playtest to see how rough that is. Might not be as fun as it sounds.

  1. This made me realize Mana Leak technology could be used on pretty much anything:

    Fizzling Bolt
    Instant - Uncommon
Deal 3 damage to target creature or player unless it's controller pays 3.

    1. Yeah, but on a proactive spell your opponent doesn't now is coming, it's basically Rhystic.

    2. Oh true. Yeah, probably best to stay away.

This could also be ongoing rather than one-shot also:

      Voodoo Bonfire
      Enchantment - Curse - Uncommon
At the beginning of enchanted player's upkeep, ~ deals 3 damage to him. He or she may pay X to reduce X of that damage.

    3. Damage as a land-destruction variant. Nice. (Feels familiar for some reason.)

  2. Impatient Flame 2R
At the end of your turn, if any opponents control no untapped lands, sacrifice ~ and it deals 6 damage to those players.

    Optional second line:
At the end of your turn, if you control any untapped lands, ~ deals 3 damage to you.

  3. I was a big fan of Quenchable Fire and I think it makes a lot of sense as an enchantment

    1. Quenchable Fire was the existing card I couldn't think to reference. Yeah.
