CCDD 092718—Corroded Invader

Cool Card Design of the Day
Here's a simple design that has a sum greater than its parts.

In retrospect, I think this needs to be 0/1 or 0/2, else uncommon.

  1. Fun and unique! My gut feeling is the lower toughness is definitely right, as an attacking deathtouch 1/2 or 1/3 is easier to trade 1-for-1 with than a deathtouch 1/4.

  2. I'd go down to 0/1, making it the undead version of monastery swiftspear.
    Really great idea I'm general!

  3. Running off that idea, it's interesting to think about what a WUBRG swiftspear megacycle might look like. Green is an easy slide into the boggle-slot, and if we're willing to expand out of evergreen, there's cute things to do in blue.

    Gladecover Ranger G
    Creature - Elf Scout
    Prowess, hexproof
    0/1

    Unassuming Archivist U
    Creature - Vedalken Wizard
    Prowess, skulk
    0/1

But what would you do in W? What's the most interesting one-drop in W (or artifact!) we can come up with?

    1. How about a Doomed Traveler variant? 0/1 Prowess that dies into a 0/1 Prowess.

    2. "Prowess, Undying" might raise some red flags at W but certainly makes for interesting blocking decisions. I like it!

    3. Let me try some artifacts for the mega cycle:

      Swiftspear Smith - 1
      Artifact Creature - Construct
      Prowess
When CARDNAME has power 3, put a +1/+1 counter on it.
      0/1

      Swiftspear - 1
      Artifact - Equipment
      Equipped creature has Prowess.
      Equip 2

      Swiftspear Ballista - 1
      Artifact - Vehicle
      Prowess
      Crew 1
      0/1

      Swiftspear Sparingpartner - XX1
      Artifact Creature - Construct
      Prowess
CARDNAME enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
      0/1

  4. I think this is a great idea, but I'm not sure it's good for common. A lot of people might be confused as to how a deathtoucher with 0 power works, right?

But for uncommon, this is an intriguing but punchy design!

    1. WotC probably (definitely) knows more than I do, but I never really thought 0-power deathtouch creatures were confusing. I feel like most players intuitively grasp that a 0-power creature deals no damage.

Does the confusion come from players wondering "why would they print a 0-power deathtoucher if it didn't work"? And if so, does this 'fix' that issue by providing a clear way to increase the creatures power?
