Theros & Born of the Gods Challenge—Review

Theros & Born of the Gods Challenge—Review
Today I review the mythic rare submissions for cards that might have been in Theros or Born of the Gods. Remember, I'm primarily focused on whether the card is a good addition to the block and how realistic the card is in terms of being printed in an actual Magic set.

Brimaz is certainly at exciting card, and I like how vigilance means you don't have to choose between making cats on offense or defense (even if that takes some of the fun of finding a way to give him vigilance or double strike or multiple attacks away from the player).

Obviously the card is dangerously undercosted (I'd cost this at {3}{W}{W} or maybe {1}{W}{W}{W} if we really want to push it), but that's a Dev issue. My biggest concern: I'm not sure the novelty of getting its tokens into combat immediately is worth breaking four lines of text up into seven. "Whenever CARDNAME attacks or blocks, put a 1/1 white Cat Soldier token OTB" is 90% functionally identical 90% of the time. Giving the tokens vigilance seems unnecessary, but if you were married to that, why not just give Brimaz "Cat creatures you control have vigilance"?

Deconstructing Theros: Monstrosity

PAX Prime is about to commence, and with it a deluge of information regarding the upcoming fall set will be presented at WotC's various PAX presentations and parties. Of course, quite a bit has already been revealed through official sources, and even more has filtered through everyone's favorite rumormongers. Jay has begun the process of taking a critical eye towards the design of Theros with his piece on Enchantment Creatures, and I'm going to continue things by taking an in-depth look at the aptly-named keyword-thing Monstrosity. To those concerned with being spoiled about content coming from unofficial sources, my analysis will be focused on the known monsters — Polukranos, World Eater; Shipbreaker Kraken; and Ember Swallower — with reference to other revealed cards (like Ordeal of Purphoros.

So let's get into it.

M13 A New Development

The M13 Design team could continue to tweak and improve the set's design indefinitely. The longer you look at something, the more you test it, the more previously invisible imperfections you find to fix. But we don't have forever. We've got less than two months to wrap this set up now. I had intended to pass the set off to a Development team much earlier, but life interceded. The current team has kept a strong eye toward the Dev side over the last couple months, so we're not starting at square one, but I can't pretend that makes up for real testing and revision from a dedicated Dev team. Regrets aside, we need to get as much proper development done as we can in the time we have left.
