Cool Card Design of the Day 11/16/2012 - The idea for a cactus treefolk was not mine—I believe it was Antny's—but I just had to make the card. So awesome.
I see what you did with the name and flavortext combo (sang=blood). Despite its underpoweredness, I would play this card just so I could smash with a cactus treefolk.
It is underpowered. You could make it 1G and then it would be slightly overpowered at common, or slightly underpowered at uncommon. You could also make it 4/1 or 3/2—mostly I just wanted it vanilla and with power higher than toughness.
The cacti-folk could be defined through an ability like: "Whenever this is dealt damage, this deals that much damage to the source's controller."
While it could retaliate to the creature that dealt damage to it, I think that would be function almost the same as deathtouch under most situations and as not meaningful as a separate effect.
While it may feel weird that a cacti's prickly needles would deal damage to a player instead of a creature, I think it's the same as a vampire with lifelink that gains life for the controller rather than itself. It's weird if you think about it, but the mind can accept it. A cacti dealing needle damaging a player should be acceptable in the same way, and it would be interesting strategically.
Uh oh, I just realized that the prickly-to-the-touch needle mechanic would punish Eldrazi or Giant Dune-Wurms too much, and I really want either the Eldrazi or the Wurms to be in the set!
I wouldn't have thought this card worked at all, but the flavor text is just audacious and funny enough to tie it together.
ReplyDeleteThis is a deliberately extremely weak card, right? Compare Centaur Courser, Nezumi Ronin, Elvish Ranger, etc.

I could totally see that.

DeleteCould swap it with "Whenever Sanguaro deals damage to a creature, it deals that much damage to that creature's controller."
DeleteThat would feel more Green. Although those are some sharp pierce-through needles!
DeleteI miss Pride of Lions.
DeleteNeeds moar bloodthirst
ReplyDelete(See: Functional reprint of Bloodrage Vampire)
The thorns seem like they should give first strike to me.
ReplyDeleteOr, "whenever a creature does damage to ~, ~ fights that creature" to keep it green
