CCDD 112912—Stoic Defender

Cool Card Design of the Day
11/29/2012 - This card's been sitting in the file for a while. It had an additional clause which ensured you only got the defensive exalted bonus if you also attacked with Stoic Defender, but that seemed much too fiddly to keep. I'm guessing it had been included originally to force you to risk an attack and prevent you from just sitting back and blocking, but it read strangely and introduces (light) memory issues. The card's just cleaner without. It probably doesn't need vigilance now either.

  1. I'm not sure what to think of this. On the one hand, I like that if your opponent is going to attack, this incentives them to attack with multiple creatures (so that some get past your big defender), which plays into White's many combat tricks. On the other hand, one of the great things about Exalted was that it let you keep a bunch of guys back on defense, but if you want to use this guy's abilities to their fullest, you have to forgo both attacking and blocking with your other creatures.

  2. It would be cool in a set with Exalted. That's about it. It's like an unrealized shoulda woulda coulda been card that never was.
