CCDD 102413—Identity Thief

Cool Card Design of the Day
10/24/2013 - Identity Thief is just a Mind Control that's countered by Essence Scatter instead of Negate. And is an awesome shapeshifter, that also copies its target's ETB and LTB effects. And when you Doom Blade it, you get your creature back.

"Just" never seems to tell the whole story.

  1. Despite the existence of Mind Control and Phyrexian Ingester, I'd still be more comfortable with this in {W}{U}. That said, it's awesome and clean. I fully expect to see this exact card text printed some time in the next few years.

  2. I agree with Jules, however if you're looking at sticking with the current devotion theme, the triple blue could be very powerful. Awesome card.

  3. this could totally cost 4 to be in line with what abduction costs. this is very overcosted.

    1. Yeah, cause nothing was broken or undercosted in Weatherlight.

    2. But it's true that this could probably cost 5-- it's basically Mind Control, except that it copies ETB/LTB triggers and gives their creature back when they kill it.

    3. It could be 5. I mean, Dev might find it's merely Very Strong at 4cc, I just wouldn't use Abduction as the baseline comparison.

  4. Really solid design. This is what Duplicant wishes it was.

  5. Great design! It's incredible that this isn't an actual Magic card (yet). To avoid rules weirdness, you could change the second line to "You may have CARDNAME enter the battlefield as a copy of the exiled card".

  6. Small nitpick: The "as [card] enters the battlefield" replacement effect shouldn't be targeted. Targeted replacement effects aren't supported by the rules.
