2/11/2014 - Like Body Double, Face Eater is a nasty shapeshifter that's still blue as long as the context of her set is dark enough. (Could otherwise be {U}{B} I suppose.)
Note that this only eats one face; it can't reset itself every time another creature dies—so you must choose wisely which death trigger to use.

The only problem is that Body Double is from Planar Chaos. I'd buy this as a mono-blue card on Innistrad, maybe, but not anywhere else.
ReplyDeleteNot on another Horror plane? Not on New Phyrexia?
DeleteBlue Phyrexian cards get other kinds of color bleed ("discard a card" and "lose 1 life") but don't care about enemy creatures dying-- so no.
DeleteCemetery Puca? Only using it once is a significant difference, though.
ReplyDeleteIt's unlike Body Double in that it doesn't "reanimate" a long-dead, discarded, or Entombed creature; it only copies something that is already on the battlefield, then dies. That's fine for a mono-blue card.
Cemetery Puca is massively similar, but I agree the difference is significant. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried this and Puca was just more fun.
DeleteBlue gets death triggers, so I don't think this needs to be black. Uncommon doesn't get creature copying, so this needs to be rare.
ReplyDeleteIs it unreasonable to cost this at {U}? In order to get any sort of value out of this, you have to kill something that's worth copying, which is already a pretty big hoop to jump through...and until something dies, it's vulnerable and does nothing for you on the board.
I was thinking Clone was uncommon, but I see it's been rare for a while.
Delete{U} is pretty aggressive; Probably doesn't break anything but {1}{U} seems just as reasonable.
Given that Artisan of Forms is {1}{U}, can change shape multiple times, and doesn't rely on being able to deal with an opponent's threat before it becomes good, I don't think {U} is unreasonable.
DeleteI don't think {U} is unreasonable, but for something that can become a Brimaz or Wurmcoil Engine just through the normal course of play, I don't see why we'd push it so hard. {1}{U} is still a damn good deal.
DeleteAlso, Artisan of Forms requires you to cast a spell targeting it, inviting a 2:1, whereas this requires you to kill an enemy creature, a no-risk move you'd be doing anyhow.
This is most similar to False Demise / Unhallowed Pact / Fool's Demise. Those cards suggest that 2C Uncommon is probably fine on this power-level wise-- not sure if copying makes it too complex though. It's also probably Black in the modern color pie, but I'll buy it in Blue for a dark setting.
