CCDD 020315: Doppelganger Nemesis

It's Doppelganger Week over on facebook, so I put up this uncanny resemblance for my profile picture. In any case, the international holiday of immense importance inspired today's design.

R&D have handled the evil twin nemesis a few different ways, but never forcing them to meet each other in combat. Mono-blue has some precedence for forcing combat interactions, but the way this doppelganger handles it is much more fight-like, so I went with Simic instead of mono-Blue.

  1. Or maybe just fight on ETB? That doesn't do the interesting involve-the-combat-step, but it would be an interesting sometimes-clone sometimes-doom-blade.

  2. Seems like this card is weaker than Clone.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

    1. Yeah, this is pretty much strictly a downside because the opponent will almost certainly attack first. I don't like how this calls out a particular of your opponent's creatures, if they have multiple with the same name (in that only the chosen one gets the ability), but then the ability itself only refers to the name.

In general, WOTC avoids symmetric abilities like this, and with good reason. I think better to make it an upside, so the last line is something like "except it has 'all creatures that share a name with this creature must block it if able,'" although I'm not sure that is really the ability the card wants.

The temptation is to use fight, though if you do this becomes a UG Wrack with Madness, which is clearly bad.

Overall, I don't think this design "works."
