I don't imagine most players will even remember that ROE had no +1/+1 counters, and fewer will care.
But, what's the flavor we gain from using them?
It's definitely simpler to know it's an N/N creature rather than Frankenstein-ing it, but I don't hate the way you can put the p/t boxes of the exiled cards right beneath Adolescent's 0/0.
The flavor gain isn't in the +1/+1 counters, but that Eldrazi Spawn are 0/1 (so this would "start" as an Eldrazi Spawn and then "grow up" due to the trigger)
Originally, this design started as 'discard N cards' but that has the card disadvantage problem and is deterministic for a given hand. Milling yourself is also potentially dangerous, so taking from the library solved two problems.
Is it clear that you choose the number of cards to exile before you see what they are? Will some players read it as "exile one card ... You may repeat this up to 8 times" or "Choose a number between 0-8. Exile that many cards ..."?
I don't love that these don't help each other when you exile copies to the ETB effect. But that was probably intentional. The swinginess of this card is a turn off. What if the trigger occurred more than once?
Start power toughness as 0/1 and give +1/+1 counters for flavor?
ReplyDeleteEldrazi debuted in an environment with zero +1/+1 counters (ROE used level counters). Thus having +1/+1 counters will always feel weird.

ReplyDeleteYou should have a tag for "library as RNG." It's a very common theme in your designs.
It really is.
