Weekend Art Challenge
Greetings, artisans! Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review, if someone volunteers to render the cards.
Design a card for this illustration. Bonus points for telling a story.
Mirrorfiend 4UB
ReplyDeleteCreature - Shapeshifter (MR)
When Mirrorfiend enters the battlefield, you may exile target creature.
You may have creatures you control enter the battlefield as a copy of the exiled card.
3/3
Nice!
DeleteEven tough not many people responded yet, I knew a design looking like this one was already taken. But you gave it a very, very nice twist
DeleteI was thinking about it, and would adding "or a creature card from your hand" work in addition to the removal aspect, or does that make it clunkier than it needs? You might want to exile some fat thing from your hand to copy if there's nothing good out on the field.
DeleteThis reminds me of a proactive Infinite Reflection, I like it. I think the cleaner version with just exiling a creature on the battlefield is good enough. Then later you could print a different card with the discard effect, "when ETB target player reveals his or her hand, you choose a creature card from it, they exile it. Creatures you control ETB as a copy of the exiled card."
DeleteCursed Mirror

Artifact
Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, you may destroy target creature with the same name as it.
This could actualy be a good sideboardcard in mirrormatches.. I think
DeleteGet it? Mirror matches? I crack myself up sometimes.
DeleteNeat design!

ReplyDeleteMirror of betrayal 4UBB (or just 5BB)
ReplyDeleteFor each creature target oponent controls, he may choose to sacrifce it. For each creature he controls, put a token a token onto the battlefield that is a copy of that creature.
The mirror does not discriminate. Even the most loyal of humans are subjected to their twisted image.
Or you could replace the first sentence with: Target opponent sacrifces any number of creatures.
Basically worse than 7 mana Plague Wind, but I suppose that's a fine place to be since 7 mana Plague Wind is pretty scary especially in our current world of 5 mana Wraths. Cool card though. Part of me wants it to be geared for multiplayer and hit every opponent, since this sort of effect is mostly at home in Commander anyway.
DeleteIs this an instant or sorcery? I presume it,s a sorcery.
DeleteAnd the rarity? Rare?

Convoke
Destroy target multicolored creature.
"White-gold? More like black and blue."
Where's the like button on this thing?
DeleteExcellent!
DeleteNyehehe! Very nicely done.
DeleteI just realized why this has convoke. Brilliant.
DeleteWhat rarity? I'd guess uncommon...
Uncommon is probably right, just because if there are enough targets for this to be common, it's possibly too strong of removal to be common.
DeleteMirror Image 4W
ReplyDeleteCreature - Shapeshifter
When Mirror Image enters the battlefield, exile target creature an opponent controls until Mirror Image leaves the battlefield.
Mirror Image's power is equal to the exiled card's toughness, and its toughness is equal to the exiled card's power.

You beat me to it! Nice. I couldn't parse out the terminology for this, which you have done superbly :)

Destroy target nonartifact attacking creature. It can't be regenerated. Put a black Spirit creature token with that creature's power and toughness onto the battlefield. Sacrifice the token at the beginning of the next end step.
Agh, beat me to it. :)
DeleteMirror of Delusion {4}
ReplyDeleteArtifact
You may choose not to untap ~ during your untap step.
{4}, {T}: Tap target creature. It doesn't untap during its controller's untap step for as long as you control an Illusion creature. Put a copy of that creature onto the battlefield. It's an Illusion in addition to its other types and has "When this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it."
What does the "not untapping" clause do? I'm assuming this is meant to be like Shackles where you can only do this to one creature at a time?
DeleteAurora's Grasp 1BB
ReplyDeleteSorcery. (R)
Exile target creature or planeswalker. Put a token that's a copy of the exiled permanent onto the battlefield. It has "5: destroy this permanent and return the exiled permanent to the battlefield under its owner's control. Any player may activate this ability."
This is too similar to a couple of other cards :/
DeleteIt'll do for now but I'll probably replace it later on.
So basically Confiscate with "{5}: ~'s controller sacrifices it. Any player may activate this ability." Pretty much Soul Ransom, in fact. Resets planeswalker loyalty (and triggers ETB/LTB abilities), I guess; is the extra functionality worth all the extra words?
DeleteIn a word: nope.
DeleteDesign #2:
Mirror of Finite Reflections. 5
Legendary Artifact. (R)
At any time, if there are three or more shard counters on CARDNAME, exile it.
Whenever an opponent casts an instant or sorcery spell copy that spell. You may choose new targets for it. Then, put a shard counter on CARDNAME.
>At any time, if there are three or more shard counters on CARDNAME, exile it.
DeleteStandard wording is
>When there are three or more shard counters on CARDNAME, exile it.
Dinosaur wording...my age is showing
DeleteI am telling a story, but I'm also pitching a returning mechanic for a Commander product, and suggesting a 4-color theme. The non-Red deck would have a Faerie theme.
ReplyDeleteFae Queen's Realm (RARE)
GWUB
World Enchantment
(When a world permanent enters the battlefield, all world permanents, except the one that has been on the battlefield the shortest amount of time, are put into their owners’ graveyards.)
Whenever a non-Faerie creature enters the battlefield under a player’s control, each other player puts a 1/1 blue and black Faerie Rogue creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
Faerie creatures can’t attack you or planeswalkers you control.
Could this be "When a world permanent enters the battlefield, all other world permanents are destroyed."? Or, maybe "When this enters the battlefield, choose one world permanent in play, then each other world permanent's controller sacrifices them"?
DeleteThese definitely seem similar to planes in feel, though obviously the implications for building your deck are quite different. Would you think five total (one for each neph-shard) in the Commander product, or more single-color/color pair cycles as well?
I didn't change the rule of World for this, and although they didn't have reminder text in the Legends set, the Comp Rules really seem to care about 2 or more entering the battlefield at once.
DeleteI didn't change the rule of World for this, and although they didn't have reminder text in the Legends set, the Comp Rules really seem to care about 2 or more entering the battlefield at once.
DeleteI've fiddled around in this area before (for an ability not a super type). In that instance, I used something like this:
DeleteWhen this etb, choose one world permanent. The rest must be sacrificed.
Something similar should whittle down the word count for you.
Mike, if that wording works, I'm fine with it. I just used the State Based Comp Rules for World as reminder text because I imagined, if the supertype were used in a supplemental product, they'd want to use the rule on the card.
Delete704.5m If two or more permanents have the supertype world, all except the one that has had the world supertype for the shortest amount of time are put into their owners’ graveyards. In the event of a tie for the shortest amount of time, all are put into their owners’ graveyards. This is called the “world rule.”
Pasteur, I would imagine at least a cycle of 5 ABCD colored world enchantments, along with some mono color ones at Rare or Uncommon.
Reprints: Evil Twin, Nemesis Trap,Mirror Universe... and probably a bunch of others. Hooray for well-established tropes!
ReplyDeleteActual design... hrm. That's a tough one. I want something less obvious than a clone effect, but I still want to tell a story. How about this?
Touch of the Nemesis 1B
Enchantment- Aura (Uncommon)
Enchant green or white creature
At the beginning of your upkeep, enchanted creature's controller loses life equal to the enchanted creature's power.
Mirror of Luck {7}
ReplyDeleteArtifact (mythic)
When ~ enters the battlefield, put mirror counters on it equal to half your life, rounded down.
Combat damage that would be dealt to you also removes that many mirror counters from ~.
When ~ has no mirror counters on it, sacrifice it. If you do, choose one —
• You gain control of each attacking creature. Untap those creatures.
• Exchange life totals with an attacking player.
Create it, and gain a lifetime of good fortune taken from those who try to break it.
I'll do the renders this week.
ReplyDeleteMirror of the Solitary-4
Artifact-Mythic
Whenever a creature enters the battlefield, exile it if it has the same name as a creature on the battlefield.
Whenever a creature dies, put target card that has the same name from exile unto the battlefield under your control.
I kept designing cards like this and realizing that wizards had simply done it better already with Supplant Form but I finally stumbled across a different solution by making it a counterspell.
ReplyDeleteI tried a few flavor text iterations but couldn't get any that I liked enough.
Mirrored Essence 3UU

Counter target creature spell. You put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of that creature.
Here's the renders. A lot of people didn't have any rarity, so I presumed.
