CCDD 101916—Roil Engine

Cool Card Design of the Day
10/19/2016 - This mana rock doesn't just accelerate your mana, it lets you cycle many of the excess lands you would draw afterward.

  1. Huh, that's interesting.

Does it mean "The first time you draw a card each turn, if it's a land, you may exile it?" If not, and your second draw is a land, how do you prove your first one wasn't?

I'm not sure how to evaluate the extra ability. It lets you replace quite a lot of unwanted draws, that seems like it may be way too strong. But maybe it often happens too late to matter?

    1. "The first time you draw a card each turn, if it's a land, you may exile it."

That. Because of what you said next.

    2. In a long game, it could be a big deal. In a short game, it might be alright:
Assuming your deck is 2/5 land, it will only draw you a new card 40% of the time, and if that new card is a land, you're stuck with it.

…That's still pretty good. Willing to believe this needs to be rare, or cost more, or have a cost on the trigger.

    3. It's weaker than "At the beginning of your upkeep, Scry 1"

    4. That is a fantastic comparison.
      Completely changes my perspective.

  2. Roil Turbine 4
    Artifact
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
Discard a land card from your hand, T: Add 2 to your mana pool. Draw a card.

    1. Remove either half of the second ability and this is still good.

    2. When I read the lead up to Jay's card, I was expecting the second ability to be just "T, discard a land, draw a card."

I think that is much cleaner than the weird miracle ability. It lacks some of the coolness, but draw abilities were a huge pain in tournaments, etc.

    3. That is better. At the point you're ditching lands, you shouldn't need the mana ability, so why not make it a tap ability. Good call.

  3. Roil Vortex 1RR
    Enchantment (R)
At the beginning of your first main phase add R to your mana pool.
R, discard a land card: Roil Vortex deals 2 damage to target opponent.

    1. I'm not a big fan of the "once per turn" clause on the original. Rather just have the card tap and discard to do an effect. Borrowing from key to the city:

      Key to the Garden 1
      Artifact
When Key to the Garden untaps, you may pay 2. If you do, draw a card.
T, discard a land card: Add one mana to your mana pool of any type that land could produce.

    2. Agreed.
      I like Roil Vortex.

Now I wish I'd named the card Roil Flush.
