CCDD 030717—City of Aspiration & City of Industry

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/7/2017 - Here's a simple take on a land that levels up after some use. You can use it immediately, and it starts fixing your mana later.

I like the core gameplay there, but I hate that it leaves a bunch of counters on your land, and keeps making new ones that don't matter at all (unless you have a Giant Fan)

Functionally the same card, City of Industry requires more text, doesn't combo with proliferate, and feels less like building or leveling up, but involves many fewer fiddly counters (and I guess combos with Hex Parasite and Thief of Blood.) Could be time or mine counters to combo with Fury Charm or Mine Layer.

  1. I wonder how it would play if it was just "if you control 6 or more lands" or similar? That's a little worse in some ways because you don't get your splash earlier, ever, but often better because it's useful even if you draw it late. It avoids counters, but is it sufficiently interesting?

    1. In theory, that's an elegant solution. In practice, the line you mentioned might be too thin to walk.

    2. "If you have fewer than three cards in your hand..."?

    3. I think you'd want the opposite to avoid the early game "I can't cast anything so I have to discard" - maybe 8 or more cards in hand.

T: Add C to your mana pool. Put a resource counter on CARDNAME.
T, Remove a resource counter from CARDNAME: Add 1 mana of any color to your mana pool.

    1. Mine and both of yours could work well as DFCs as well.

    2. I'd hate to have to flip your version out of its sleeve every turn, but otherwise I agree, and like your design.
