CCDD 041217—Pisonic Intrusion & Nightmare Made Real

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/12/2017 - Here are a couple cards to help support mixing mill and damage as a strategy.

Obviously, Psionic Intrustion can't mill a player by itself (in any quantity) as you'll kill them first, but it can absolutely push a mill deck over the top if you can sneak some damage in.

Nightmare Made Real does the opposite, trying to make your mill effect relevant to your deck that plans to zero out your opponent's life total. How much of a problem would this be with Traumatize in Modern?

They combo, as it happens, but I wouldn't put these in the same block.

  1. Why do we want to support mixing Mill and Damage?

    1. So that you don't have to go all-in on one or the other, but can present a balanced strategy. Something infect and damage lacked in Scars of Mirrodin.

    2. Actually, cards like Mycosynth Fiend existed for exactly this stated reason.

The decks where you mixed infect and regular damage were some of the most interesting in Scars block draft. You had to decide your win condition dynamically as you played the games, and carefully arrange trades in such a way as to leave you capable of winning.

I don't think I mind the occasional Mycosynth Fiend in theory.

  2. Nightmare Made Real would be a sick instant.

Crack fetch, cast an instant or sorcery? Take 2.
Board dies in combat? Take an additional 2-4.
    Storm/Eggs combo? Please just die.

    1. Sounds good to me. Probably {1}{B}.

    2. The problem is tracking that number. Really tricky

    3. Playtesting might convince me, but I'm not convinced.

  3. It might be too useful, but I'd maybe like to see a card which could go in either direction so it fits better with a "bit of both" strategy.
