CCDD 050217—Staff of Wisdom

Cool Card Design of the Day
5/2/2017 - Staff of Wisdom is a hybrid between color-fixing like Mana Prism and card advantage like Jayemdae Tome. I was thinking about ways to let a deck play out differently more, and using your opponent's deck is the perfect resource.

Staff of Wisdom lets you play cards from your opponent's deck, and lets you ignore the color restrictions that often make that impractical.

  1. This is very strong mana fixing, easily allowing you to cast cards even when missing multiple colors of mana (or not playing those colors at all). It also casts CCC as easily as any other spell. Though it does only fix spells and not abilities, the first ability alone seems very strong, and then it gets card advantage to boot!

I would consider making it only help the cards it pillories to focus the design. As is, this is going to let Urzatron hardcast Progenitus (or whatever) more than it ever gets used to cast your opponent's cards.

    1. It is very strong color-fixing. I was thinking that was okay since it doesn't also add mana to your mana pool, but your Progenitus example has changed my mind.

      Re-design along the same lines:

{1}, {T}: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. You may cast a card exiled by ~.
{2}, {T}: Exile the top card of target opponent's library.

      Re-design using your suggested focus:

{2}, {T}: Exile the top card of target opponent's library.
{T}: Cast a card exiled by ~. You may spend mana as though it were mana of any type to cast it.
