Weekend Design Challenge 100220 - Have You Seen This Goblin?

Happy Friday, Artisans! Click through to see this weekend's design challenge. Your mission is to design a custom magic card that follows the guidelines. Over the course of the weekend, give feedback to your fellow designers on their designs and incorporate their feedback to iterate on your own. I'll try to offer some feedback of my own starting on Monday.

We haven't done an art challenge in a while, and we still aren't doing one because I couldn't find a suitable piece of art for this week, so this is going to be more of an art description challenge. Design a noncreature card to go with an art description that reads:

Setting: Any (city or town)

Location: A quiet, shaded wall of brick or stone

Action: A "wanted" poster for a goblin is tacked on the wall. At the top it reads "Have You Seen This Goblin?" followed by a drawing of a sneering goblin's face. (This card will be in a core set, so maybe it's a known character like Grenzo or Krenko.) At the bottom of the poster are details about the reward. It looks like the poster has been up for a while with no success.

Focus: The goblin's face

Mood: This character is causing the authorities a lot of headaches.

Good luck and have fun!

  1. Oh, that's a great prompt. I had a lot of ideas, but difficulty deciding which one to make.

  2. Evade justice WR.
    Instant.
The next time target creature you control would be dealt damage this turn, prevent that damage. Instead draw X cards, then discard X cards, where X is the damage prevented this way.

    1. "Evade Justice" as the name of a white card is gutsy. The text box works great with the WR color pie, and it resonates well with the name, but tying the two together is a tall order.

I remember a while back (I think it was for Suvnica) this blog discussed the idea of a WR faction that was "resistance" themed, i.e. fighting for good but against the established legal order. If the character in the wanted poster is the goblin version of Jor Kadeen or Pia Nalaar I could totally see this working.

    2. And the card would then need to be renamed to "Evade NAME_OF_OPPRESING_STRUCTURE" but yes it is a very WR thing to do that we have not seen before.

    Enchant Creature
Whenever enchanted creature deals combat damage, create that many treasure tokens.
When enchanted creature dies, target opponent gains control of all your artifact tokens.

    1. Very cool flavor. Treasure tokens are a tough sell, though, because they can just be sacrificed in response (or beforehand), making the second ability trinket-text-y.

What about a first ability that puts +1/+1 counters on the enchanted creature, and a second ability that gives the opponent treasures equal to its power?

Now I'm wondering what a design with clue tokens would look like...

    2. I forgot to write that the tokens enter play tapped!

The intent was that you could not profit from them imediatelly.

I love the idea of using clues, too.
