CCDD 072413—Ember Phoenix & Lizard Wizard

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/24/2013 - Here are a couple cards messing with red's new play-this-card-now-or-never mechanic. Ember Phoenix is a Future Sight for combat, while Lizard Wizard is a more efficient, but riskier Rummaging Goblin.

I may have gotten a little silly with the second card, after finding such adorable art…

  1. That Ember Phoenix isn't really a phoenix.

  2. Ember Phoenix (and its inspiration, new Chandra) remind me of what I was getting at back when I wrote Subdivisions (here: http://goblinartisans.blogspot.com/2011/07/subdivisions-part-one.html), that the Future Sight/Oracle of Mul Daya mechanic could be situated into Red's slice of the pie as a representation of its ability to accelerate time (i.e. bring the future into the present).

Re-reading that made me sad that Snapcaster Mage wasn't red. (Which MaRo confirmed that it could easily have been!)

    1. I think he's said that he might have preferred it in red at some points, but didn't even think of it because Tiago wanted a blue card. It might be a good example in an argument against more invitational cards.

    2. An argument against invitational cards in the sense that it causes them to feel beholden to amateur designers? I'm not really sure what you're saying.

    3. I'm not even sure anymore. Feel free to ignore me.

    4. I think invitational cards are an awesome idea, but there definitely is a problem that top winners naturally want very spike cards: ie. very resource managing, very efficient, and very strong.

Snapcaster was an awesome design: beautiful and elegant and interesting. But it was ridiculously good, it probably should have been pushed less (eg. being red not blue) even as a top-tier card, but wizards understandably didn't want to risk making an invitational card suck.

I think that's what axx1e meant. Or should have meant IMHO :)

    2. Ideas Unbound should totally color-shift to red.
