Weekend [Art] Challenge 070512

Weekend Art Challenge
Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, which I will try to provide, and which everyone is welcome to provide as well.

If you choose, you may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times. I will post and review the most recent submission from each designer some time on Monday, life permitting. To help ensure I recreate your design accurately, please use CARDNAME instead of ~ and don't use the {} symbol images in your submissions.

This weekend there is no art, because I want to present another kind of challenge. You will create a one-mana creature with the exact Oracle text of an existing Magic card, probably one that isn't already a one-mana creature. (You can update reminder text or numbers that reflect the creature's printed CMC/P/T. You can also color-shift it, or change the magnitude of costs or effects, though doing so may cost your design bonus points.) The goal is to make an interesting and/or useful one-drop and—if possible—to cast that rules text in a new light.

  1. Thopter Repair Squad 1
    Artifact creature - Thopter
    Flying, haste
When you cast Thopter Repair Squad, return all cards named Thopter Repair Squad from your graveyard to the battlefield.

  2. ??? Does this challenge correspond to perform the following search:

    1. Technically, that satisfies the requirements I set out, but I was hoping you'd find abilities from cards that cost more than 1 to graft onto your one-drop.

    2. So, something more like: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?output=spoiler&method=visual&sort=rating-&action=advanced&cmc=%7c%3d%5b2%5d%7c%3d%5b3%5d&type=+%5b%22Creature%22%5d&rating=+%3C%5b3.2%5d+%3E%5b2.7%5d

    3. The source doesn't have to be a creature card.

  3. Or is it find a card that you think would be ok to reprint as a 1 CMC creature under NWO?

  4. Well then:

    Wyluli Wolf G
    Creature — Wolf

T: Target creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.

"When one wolf calls, others follow. Who wants to fight creatures that eat scorpions?"

    1. It's not a reprint. The idea is to take the text box of another, existing card (a bigger creature, an enchantment, etc.) and put it on a new 1-mana creature design. That doesn't include the power and toughness.

  5. This is harder then it first sounds to get interesting creatures out of that aren't just straight up overpowered or clones of creatures that already exist xD

    Aeolist R
    Creature - Human Shaman (R)
1, T, Sacrifice Aeolist: Aeolist deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
    1/1

    Hollow-Tree Chanter G
    Creature - Elf Druid (U)
Hollow-Tree Chanter enters the battlefield tapped.
You may choose not to untap Hollow-Tree Chanter during your untap step.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if Hollow-Tree Chanter is tapped, put a chant counter on it.
T, Remove any number of storage counters from Hollow-Tree Chanter: Add G to your mana pool for each chant counter removed this way.
    1/1

The counters were renamed on this one for flavor but storage counters would still work fine.

    Skirg Antagonist R
    Creature - Goblin Shaman (R)
At the beginning of each player's end step, Antagonist deals 2 damage to that player unless one of his or her opponents was dealt damage this turn.
    1/1

    Master Marksman W
    Creature - Human Archer (R)
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put an arrow counter on Master Marksman.
T: Master Marksman deals X damage to target attacking or blocking creature, where X is the number of arrow counters on Master Marksman.
    1/1

This technically breaks the rules but eh, it still keeps as close to the original as possible. It's a pretty good card but not quite broken I think since it dies to basically everything as a 1/1.

    Bloodbraid Shaman R
    Creature - Elf Shaman (U)
    Haste
    Cascade
    1/1

Would be fine if not for Hypergenesis et al but I included it anyway because it seemed cool.

    Cliffside Herder G
    Creature - Human Druid (R)
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
RG, T: Choose target Beast creature you control and target creature an opponent controls. Those creatures fight each other.
    1/1

I hope the type restriction stops this from being really nuts.

    Bloody Channeller B
    Creature - Human Shaman (R)
Noncreature spells you cast cost 2 less to cast.
Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, counter that spell unless you sacrifice a creature.
    1/1

    Consuming Hexcaster B
    Creature - Human Shaman (R)
All creatures have "At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice this creature unless you pay 1 life."
    1/1

Maybe more to come, it's fun looking through old cards to try and make them into one drops.

    2. I did have to look through hundreds of random cards to get that many xD I think my favourite is probably Skirg Antagonist, although Hollow-Tree Chanter, and the two black ones seem interesting too.

    3. Making Blood Funnel a creature makes it loads better, I'd actually want to play with Bloody Channeler. Given how different it is from the original, this is my favorite of your options.

    4. Ok, I'll put forward Bloody Channeler (Blood Funnel) and Skirk Antagonist (Antagonism) as my actual submissions for now (I misremembered Skirk as Skirg in the other posts xD).

    5. But for fun, I'll put some more below:

      Orochi Skinshifter G (Molting Skin)
      Creature - Snake Shaman (U)
Return Orochi Skinshifter to its owner's hand: Regenerate target creature.
      1/1

Magus of the Mists U (Swirl the Mists)
      Creature - Human Wizard (R)
As Magus of the Mists enters the battlefield, choose a color word.
All instances of color words in the text of spells and permanents are changed to the chosen color word.
      1/1

      Viridian Chimeric U (Chimeric Staff)
      Creature - Human Druid(R)
{X}: Viridian Chimeric becomes an X/X Construct artifact creature until end of turn.
      1/1

  6. It is said that at some point during every Magic Designer's career, they must design a Necropotence.

For me, today is that day.

    Demonic Zoea B {R}
    Creature - Thrull
    Skip your draw step.

Whenever you discard a card, exile that card from your graveyard.

Pay 1 life: Exile the top card of your library face down. Put that card into your hand at the beginning of your next end step.

    1. Meant to make that (r) = Rare, but I accidentally made it { r} as in {r}.

    2. It's base P/T are -1/-1? And it's red?

      Delete
    3. It's apparently a black rare, but I'm with Jay on the P/T. At least make it 0/0.

      Delete
    4. I originally had it as a -3/-3, but that would just be impossible to use proactively. The reason I kept it at -1/-1 is not because I think that's the best place for it to be, but because I expect development to change it and I wanted to communicate my intent as loudly as possible.

I have no idea if Necropotence-You-Can-Only-Cast-With-Glorious-Anthem-In-Play is too strong, or even playable. Playtesting would be necessary.

      Demonic Zoea B (R)

  12. Two alternatives, somewhat similar:

    Goblin Recruits- R
    Creature- Goblin (Uncommon)
    0/3
    Double strike

    Furnace Dweller- R
    Creature- Elemental (Rare)
    0/2

    Patient Aerialist U

    (Drop of Honey)
    Ravenous Honey Badger G
    Creature - Badger (Rare)

    Night of Souls' Betrayal->
    Knight of Souls' Betrayal B
    Creature-Spirit Knight (R)
    All creatures get -1/-1.
"And that's why you should always make sure to exclude yourself when cursing everyone in a room."

    Creature-Human Soldier (R)

    And my submission:

    Null Chamber->

    1. Polar Bears everywhere. At a minimum, they'd function as Squadron Hawks, pulling up new PBCs before dying. They could thin your deck, fill up your graveyard, and do it all while being pretty cool. A less manic twist might be to let them summon up enchantments instead, mirroring Hibernation's End (great card to pick by the way) instead of copying it.

  26. Ooh, interesting question. The best that occurs to me is:

    Panglacial Scout G
    1/1
    Creature -- Elf Scout
    Trample
While you're searching your library, you may cast Panglacial Scout from your library.

Based on Panglacial Wurm. It's not perfect as trample is a bit superfluous and ideally there'd be a restriction against dropping more than one from one search. But I like the idea that you can get a vanilla one-drop if that's what you're missing (as long as you have a fetchland).

    ReplyDelete
  27. Elemental Wood G
    Creature — Elemental (M)
As Elemental Wood enters the battlefield, sacrifice any number of untapped Forests.
Elemental Wood's power and toughness are each equal to the number of Forests sacrificed as it entered the battlefield.

    Still bad?

    Replies
    1. A 0/0 for G *might* have a home in some decks that rely on "whenever a creature dies" triggers, but this is still pretty near unplayable.

      Delete
    2. Am I missing something? Do you mean, you can't play it on turn 1? Or do you think there's something wrong with the template -- it looks like it correctly as "as this enters" not "when this enters".

Or just that it's still bad? If so, I agree -- it's interesting to drop the cost to G, but even then, it's still a lot worse than Slime Molding and other X/X for XG creatures. If it was "sacrifice forests", it would be a lot more reasonable -- like an X-cost Scythe Tiger.

      Delete
    3. I thought about the same card but ultimately opted against it. A bit perturbed about the mythic rarity.

      Delete
    4. I think he's saying that playing it as a 0/0 has some utility in certain decks, but actually sacrificing forests for it is as bad as the original.

The drawback is that it's basically {X}{G}, for an X/X, but in addition, you lose those lands forever. The smallest adjustments you could make to improve it would be to either remove the "untapped" rider, double the P/T, or to allow all players to sacrifice forests to pump it.
