CCDD 010814—Scavenger of the Damned

Cool Card Design of the Day
1/8/2014 - This was the first idea I had for last weekend's art challenge, but it just didn't fit the art at all. For a brief while, the second ability put the card on top of your library, but I didn't want to be able to recur the same creature turn after turn. This is a more challenging puzzle.

  1. This could be awesome if there was a common/uncommon Sphinx of Jwar Isle!

  2. Why is the first ability {1} and the second ability {B}?

What deck wants the second ability?

    1. Both good questions. I agree that the abilities should probably cost the same. The 'bottom of library' ability is on a surprising number of other cards (Grazing Kelpie, Junktroller, Mistveil Plains, etc.) and has been known to matter in competitive play. In the Eggs deck, Conjurer's Bauble is a key combo piece that's used to recur cards and eventually win. In Commander, it gets back crucial creatures when combined with a tutor effect. It also shuts down opponents' Rise from the Graves, Deathrite Shaman activations, and so on.

    2. Also, this works extremely well with Cellar Door.

    3. Because the second ability is black and the first isn't.
Not married to that, but that's my reasoning.

    4. I think the goal is that oyu mill yourself out and then draw perfect every turn. Am I wrong?

    5. On its own, yeah, this just thins your deck and guarantees you draw gas if you make it to the late game.

    6. The second ability doesn't seem black to me. It's actually seen most often by far in artifacts (Vessel of Endless Rest, Junktroller, Conjurer's Bauble, etc.) and occasionally in green (Bow of Nylea, Nantuko Tracer) or white (Mistveil Plains, Lin Sivvi).

    7. Putting cards on the bottom or putting creatures on the bottom?

    8. Oh, I see. Strangely enough, I can't find *any* precedent for putting specifically creatures on the bottom, unless you count Lin Sivvi. I suppose there's a case to be made for this ability being black, but since artifacts get a strictly better ability all the time, I'd say you're safe costing the second ability at {1}.

  3. Should the second ability target?
