CCDD 013014—Mogg Skulk

Cool Card Design of the Day
1/30/2014 - Goblins are such cowards.

The bad news is, Mogg Skulk can be blocked all day long by a mere Goat. The good news is, it'll nug your opponent for 3 damage if she doesn't devote a blocker to it, and it will never die in normal combat.

…Maybe it should be uncommon. Or maybe the second ability is more upside than down.

  1. "CARDNAME can't block" is in black's slice of the color pie, but it fits the flavor much better than any of red's alternatives. I'm not sure whether to dump the flavor in favor of "attacks each turn if able" or reflavor a bit and change the colors. I guess the first one could be the Goblin running away from its controller...

    1. This could be {B}{R} in the right set. Or even just {1}{B}.

    2. I'm interested in this in {1}{B}. Could keep it as a black goblin, but this flavor seems like it it would fit some sort of nightmare that haunts you unless you banish it every night. I like this card, especially in a set that can place any value on "attack" triggers (which seems very plausible to do).

  2. This effect could be cool on a smoke-bomb wielding rogue:

    Vanishing Evicerator 1B
    Creature - Rogue (U)
Whenever CARNDAME becomes blocked, remove it from combat.
    3/1

    1. I like this version a lot, but it feels blue to me for some reason. (Actually, it's pretty close to white's old Gustcloak ability... weird.)

  3. I suggest uncommon, 2R, and change the text box to "When CARDNAME blocks or becomes blocked, remove it from combat." Fun parallelism and keeps the ability firmly in red. Or would unlimited chump-blocking on defense leads to too many stalled games?

    1. Unlimited chump-blocking is dangerous but not unheard of (Fog Bank). That said, no way it's red.

  4. I wonder if this will just play as "This can't attack if your opponent controls any creatures" which might not be interesting. There's no downside to blocking this and so, why not attack? There may be a Johnny element however (combo-ing it with attack triggers like ordeals) that could make this a fun uncommon in the right environment.

    1. It does tie up a blocker sometimes, which is about as Red as it gets

    2. It plays as "This can't attack if your opponent controls at least as many untapped creatures as you." Which is better than Mogg Toady (whom I just found out exists).

  5. Nice card. The flavor design definitely needs a tweak. The art looks much more like a Lorwyn Goblin, than one of the dome-headed Moggs of Rath. It's even got the animal traits common to Lorwyn Boggarts.

By the way, this is still a great card as a 2/1 for 1R. Tying up a blocker is a very good effect for Red. Altogether, I would suggest:

    Boggart Pesterer (COM)
    1R
    Creature - Goblin Warrior
    2/1
Whenever NAME becomes blocked, remove it from combat.
Nearly half of Auntie Wort's Raiders were unarmed, perfering to rush the clachan with open arms and grabby mitts.
