CCDD 103117—Animate Soul & Quick Stitch

Cool Card Design of the Day
10/31/2017 - This was the creepiest card I found sitting in my CCDD folder. I suspect the inspiration (from January) was to mess with base power and toughness while reanimating, or perhaps I wanted to do the Shade version of Rise from the Grave?

That's neat, I guess, but all that extra text really makes it want to be an aura, like Animate Dead. Which is one of the very last cards you'd ever want to add more text to.

Actually, making a sorcery version of Animate Dead seems like a great way to simplify an old favorite. That's much more exciting to me:

It's alive!

Happy Halloween

  1. Almost sure to be broken, but:

    They’re Baaaack!

    Sorcery - Mythic Rare
Return any number of target creature cards in any graveyard to the battlefield under your control, then put X -1/-1 counters on each, where X is the number of creature cards returned in this way.

  2. Soul separator tech:

    Animate Soul 2BB
    Sorcery
Exile target creature card from your graveyard. Create a token that's a copy of that card, except it's 0/1, it's a Shade in addition to its other types, and it has "B: This creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn".

I really liked soul separator, and I could see either half of the effect as a neat stand alone card.

    1. What does exiling and making a token copy get us, apart from preventing further animation?

    2. A token card in booster packs

  3. Yes, very creepy!

I wonder, does magic gain anything from "auras fall off if the permanent type changes"? Could it just be that there's a restriction on what you initially target with it, but after that, it just stays on. (Protection etc would still remove it) Does that break any useful interactions? I think it would be more intuitive, I think most people forget about "that causes the aura to fall off".

Then animate dead could be something like "Enchant creature card in a graveyard. As this ETBs, return enchanted card to the battlefield until this leaves the battlefield"

    1. Duel Masters does something similar with evolution creatures.

So if I kill an enchanted creature, the aura stays on it in the graveyard? And if I reanimate it, I get the aura back too? What happens if I put it on top of my library?

    2. To clarify, in DM, an evolution creature card covers up the creature it replaces. When it leaves play, all the cards in the stack go to the same place, but they're no longer associated with each other.

    3. Oops. Ok, "creature dying" is probably the case that needs to make the aura fall off. I feel like intuition would be that an aura falls off when a creature leaves the battlefield, but not when it changes type or enters the battlefield. But there may not be a simple way to template that so it's not confusing.

When ever one or more creature cards is exiled from your graveyard create a token that's a copy of that card, except it's 2/2 black zombie in addition to its other types and colours
When ever one or more nonland-non creature cards is exiled from your create a X/X black Incantation token with power and toughness equal to that spells converted mana cost.
When ever one or more land cards is exiled from your graveyard add BB to your mana pool.

    to complicated :P

  5. Here's a wacky implementation that Amonkhet makes conceivable:

    Animate the Dead 1B
    Sorcery
Put target creature card in any graveyard OTB under your control. Create a black Still Kinda Dead aura token with "Enchanted creature gets -1/-0" and "If this dies, sacrifice enchanted creature" and attach it to that creature.

    Creature - Zombie Wizard
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a -1/-1 counter on CARDNAME and exile target creature card from a graveyard. If you do, CARDNAME becomes a copy of that creature.

    1. For some reason, I expect it to end with "except it gains this ability."

    2. Yeah, I like the idea of it ticking up the counters/ticking down its life while moving from form to form; but I think that's probably got to cost a lot more/probably has some U in its cost.
