Challenge #3: Farewell, Celine Dion

With Magic 2013 coming out in July, we'll finally say goodbye to the cycle of Titans.  Love 'em or hate 'em, these fearsome five have been a force to be reckoned with.  But now that they're leaving, what's going to drive sales of M13?  That's where you come in!

Farewell, Celine Dion

Your challenge is to replace the Titans with a new cycle of mythic rare creatures.  This cycle should fill a similar role in marketing the set.  Judging will be based on the following criteria:

  • Do the cards feel mythic rare?
  • Do they feel like a cycle?
  • Are they readily appealing to players?
  • Is their power level high enough to be exciting, but not so high as to be format-warping?  (Primeval Titan, I'm looking at you.)

E-mail your five cards to tweetforcealpha@gmail.com by midnight on Friday, May 25.  This challenge is open to everyone.  One entry per person.  Please specify your preferred name or pseudonym.  The winners will be posted on Monday, May 28.

  1. Ho-lee Crap. At least I won't feel the pressure of placing two weeks in a row. This is a really tough challenge.

  2. A clarification. Based on the fact that there is nothing about this in the judging criteria either way, I presume that we are free to design a cycle that fits thematically (or even mechanically) the alternate M13 set going on in other parts of this site OR to just design a cycle under the assumption that it's going into some "blind" M13 set and we're just replacing the titans? I don't think it will really affect the cycle I'm working on either way but I'm curious and so I figure others probably are too.

    1. Real-world M13 is the one that counts, but we know very little about it. Also, fitting in is not an important judging criterion for this sort of cycle; the Titans didn't particularly fit in with any of the mechanical themes of M11 or M12.

Basically, don't worry about that. Just design some awesome cards.
