CCDD 112412—Peer Below

Cool Card Design of the Day
11/24/2012 - I don't know that this effect is particularly red, though I do think it's at least arguable. It's really just what came to mind when I saw this Dwarf inspecting this crag.

What do you think? Red can discard cards to draw a cards and it can sacrifice Mountains to empower effects. Is this kosher? Assuming we agree it doesn't belong in a core set, what kind of expert set might Peer Below belong in?

  1. While I don't really have a problem with finding ways to give Red more access to card draw (especially at a severe cost), I don't find the relationship between sacrificing mountains and drawing cards to be particularly resonant.

In my head, Fireblast tells a story of enraging your local volcano gods to, well, blow up the landscape and kill your opponent. Presumably there's a story about mining precious resources here, but something like distributing +1/+1 counters (i.e. precious metals turned to weaponry) would make much more conceptual sense to me.

  2. Maybe some flavor text about unearthing ancient knowledge or lost relics?

  3. Eeeeee... I don't like this. Storm Raining yourself to draw cards is going to be so annoying as you won't be able to play what you draw. It does have nice flavour and it does feel red, I just think this would play badly. I could see things like "discard two cards or one land card" or sacrificing a permanent other than a land, though.

  4. In a world where LD doesn't get de-powered, this could be:

    Dwarven Mining 1R
    Sorcery
Destroy target land. It's controller draws a card.
