Round 3 Pitches!

It's time for the next round of pitches!  We have five worlds left, and each of them has tons of potential but also some unanswered questions. Here is the "homework" for each world after the second pitch.

  • Ankh-Theb: Find more mechanical themes. Possibly determine factions and/or color pie divisions.
  • Athambia Academy: Clarify the flavor of the Academy itself. Show us something about other Houses, or the role of the school in its world.
  • Ekkremes: Show us what kind of world this set takes place in.
  • Frontier: Invent more mechanics.
  • Sephorgia A: Decide which mechanics are important for evoking the Arthurian flavor.
  • Sephorgia B: Demonstrate something that goes on in this world besides enchantments.

Although it is not mandatory that your pitch satisfies the homework, we think these are good starting points for improving the sets as they are right now.  If you have (or want) ideas on how to accomplish these goals, please head to the forum and discuss them!

For the third round of pitches, please send the following form to tweetforcealpha@gmail.com.  The deadline is midnight, Pacific time, on Sunday, November 25.  Anyone may pitch any set except the person whose Round 2 pitch was promoted for that set.  (For example, George Gone may not pitch for Ankh-Theb this round.)  You may make major changes to a set's themes or mechanics, as long as it's still recognizable.

  • Which set are you pitching?
  • What is the name of your pitch?
  • What are the major mechanical themes in the set according to your vision?
  • Please present six common cards of a color different from the color in the second round pitch.  These cards should clearly demonstrate at least one major mechanical theme of the set.
  • In 50 words or less, explain how this theme fits into the set, either mechanically and/or in terms of flavor.

I've filled it out with three sample answers for your edification and amusement.

Which set are you pitching?
Frontier

What is the name of your pitch?
Wurms Gone Wild

What are the major mechanical themes in the set according to your vision?
Gold counters, Duel, and powering out huge fatties.

Please present six common cards of a color different from the color in the second round pitch.  These cards should clearly demonstrate at least one major mechanical theme of the set.
[Left to the reader's imagination.]

In 50 words or less, explain how this theme fits into the set, either mechanically and/or in terms of flavor.

The wild west is full of dangerous beasts.  Since gold counters allow mana ramp in colors that usually have limited access to it, we see many more large creatures at common.  Mesa Crusher and other high CMC creatures can also be revealed in a duel.

Which set are you pitching?
Sephorgia A

What is the name of your pitch?
The Faerie Realms

What are the major mechanical themes in the set according to your vision?
Transformation (creatures flipping into enchantments), Oaths, and Cascade into [type].

Transformation reflects the mercurial nature of the Unseelie Court.  Blue has a particularly strong theme of trickery, which is reflected in the Sidhe Highwayman's ability to steal an aura.  Most of these effects happen at sorcery speed to avoid the un-fun excesses of Lorwyn's fae.

Which set are you pitching?
Athambia Academy

What is the name of your pitch?
Steampunk Noir University

What are the major mechanical themes in the set according to your vision?
Level Up, Vehicles, Golems, and opposite color pair Houses.

House Munjata's mechamancers are particularly proficient in making and maintaining airships and cogcoaches for the university.  Junkglider is one of the simplest examples, enabling aggressive strategies as an alternative to Leveler decks.  Munjati Sentinel and similar Golems offer a third late game plan.

Fine print: You may ignore the color restriction on commons if you have a good reason to do so; e.g., major artifact or gold themes.

  1. Looks good, just for clarification has Sephorgia been split into 2 different worlds (i.e. by the end of the pitch we would have one pitch remain Sephorgia and the other renamed in some way) or is just one world still require 2 different types of pitches?

    1. Sephorgia is still one world. We picked two possible directions for it, but we're not planning to keep both of them.

  2. I would add that anyone submitting for Frontier should clarify whether there are Eldrazi or not, and how gold counters will be used.
