CCDD 061516—Coattails

Cool Card Design of the Day
6/15/2016 - As much promise as ridealong shows, it's a cost-reduction mechanic that kicks in when you've got more mana, letting you cast more of your cards faster, but only once you've got plenty of mana. A more reliably gratifying mechanic would give you a bonus for casting your small card late.

Coattails is kicker except you get to use the mana that improves your card on another spell. Of course, you've got to have a bigger spell to do that…

Since a one-mana coattails card only requires you to cast a two-mana card before it, for a total of three mana, the bonus can't make the end result as good as a three-drop. 2cc coattails cards require a three-mana spell, for a total of five mana, giving us some more room for improvement. 3cc coattails cards require four-mana spells to kick, for a total of seven mana, giving them a lot of room to grow. Each could approximately double in value, provided they start a touch weak, but some need to start strong and can only benefit from coattails so much.

  1. Oh yeah, I wasn't sure that was going to work, but I agree, it seems more interesting than ridealong. It's a little like storm but less broken :)

  2. Why not just "If ~ was not the first spell you cast this turn.."?

    1. Because then any 0- or 1-mana spell triggers them, and that's much less a late-game mechanic like kicker.
