CCDD 070617—Gangling Refractor

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/6/2017 - Getting to copy your opponent's kill spell seems like a more fun twist on the kind of spell protection Glyph Keeper offers.

  1. I worry this is akin to Sengir Vampire - one of those abilities that looks really fun except for it's generally not going to be triggered by your opponent. In this case, since your opponent gets the option to target it or not, its essentially strictly worse hexproof.

With an Eldrazi, you can do EVEN WEIRDER stuff though, so perhaps:

    Gangling Refractor
    3C
    Creature - Eldrazi - Rare
Whenever an opponent casts a spell, he or she chooses ~ as one of its targets, if able.
Whenever ~ becomes the target of a spell, you may copy that spell and choose new targets for it.
    4/4

    1. This is strictly worse than hexproof, which is something all hexproof-like abilities should aim for.

And it's not going to fire very often, but it will fire more often than Glyph Keeper, which was the goal.

  2. Very cool conditional hexproof twist! I really like it on eldrazi, but with the right flavor it could really go anywhere.

  3. Agreed, this is pretty cool. And very good against removal spell in Limited. In constructed (where Reality Smasher and Kira Glass Spinner are good), this is great against mid-range but bad against creature less control. That might be good for Standard though? Where creature less control has more problems succeeding.

    1. Yeah, I'm super happy with a Glasskite-like ability that is conditional like that.

  4. "Whenever ~ becomes the target of a spell or ability for the first time in a turn, choose a new target for that spell or ability at random."
