CCDD 100813—Plague Caller

Cool Card Design of the Day
10/8/2013 - Plague Caller is directly inspired by Pasteur's Killer Queen. I wanted to capitalize on the bugs-killing-you story by making it clear that it's a swarm and they're eating you and your protein grows the swarm.

  1. I'd be happy to open this in a draft or sealed pool. I feel like it wants to be green with a black activation though.

    1. Black is fine; compare Xathrid Necromancer or Ogre Slumlord. In fact almost all the cards with that effect nowaday are black (as opposed to those that trigger on a specific creature's death, like Mitotic Slime).

This art wants the creature to have flying though.

    2. Well, the fact that it makes green tokens is a bit odd for a mono-black card.

    3. This card might want to be a rat.

    4. I'd just creature and tokens all black. If we can't have black insect tokens, changing the creature type would be reasonable.

For the design, it's interesting, I really like it.

I'm not sure if it's too powerful against small creatures. If you have this and one token, you can machine gun any number of 1/1s opposite. But for a 4-mana rare maybe that's fine.

    5. This could theoretically be green with a black activation, or multicolor, but mechanically I think mono-black is best.

There are numerous cards that make tokens of other colors, but there's no reason these insects need to be green in the vacuum that is CCDD, and black insect tokens are clearly fine.

Rats would work just as well (again, in a vacuum) if not slightly better.
